RESIDENT MAGISTRATES COURT

THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Parker, Esq., K.M.) bad; characters. Catherine Fielding, alias Riley, ajj,} Bridget Sullivan, were charged with being drunk and disorderly early this morning in Thames-street. They were tj a j> charged with' being loose characters and disturbing the peace, and with having broken two panes of glass in Oamaru gaol after being arrested, valued at 3s. Evidence having been given proving the various charges, his Worship sentenced Fielding to 7 days' imprisonment, and Sullivan to 12 days. The accused promised to pay for the broken glass, and were remanded to give them an opportunity of doing so. OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE. James M'Kenzie was charged witli obstructing Constable Cleary in the execution of his duty. The charge arose out of an attempt on the part of the accused to rescue Riley and Sullivan from the constable. Accused pleaded guilty, and said that it would not have happened had he been sober. His Worship could not accept this as an excuse, but as accused did not go beyond the mere attempt of rescuing the prisoners, he would make the fine 40s, with alternative of going to gaol for 14 days. ALLEGED LARCENY AS A BAILEE. Jqseph ' Douall was charged with appropriating to his own use certain cheques and bank-notes of the value of LBB, the property of Wm. Gruar, storekeeper, of Ngapara. On the application of Mr. O'Meagher, who had only been engaged by accused in the court to conduct the defence, an adjournment waa> granted till Monday. Bail was allowed accused in Ll4O and two sureties of L7O) each.
