LIVINGSTONE.

(from our own correspondent. ) The school inspector (Mr. 0. p c t r ; > examined tho Livingstone and Maer> whenua schools, on Wednesday Livingstone. There was a good attend ance of children from the east side of th" river, whilst the, other side was r opr ° sented by five children only, and thev had—thanks to tlie attentions of the County Council to tho wants of the district—to wade the river. The examina". tion was very satisfactory in its results and reflects great credit upon teacher (Mr. D. Sincliar). The contrast as compared with the examination that took place on the 4th November last yoar was very marked. Of those presented' 62 per cent, passed—a better result, Mr* Petrie remarked, than he had got in tho neighborhood during the last week or twoand when it is borne in inind that tho schools here are taught only half-time and all other schools around full timo, the result speaks strongly in Mr. Sinclair's; favor as a painstaking and industrious teacher. Another.month is nearly ended, and all that has yet been done to provide us a footbridge to replace the one carried away by the flood on the 24th or 25th of May is talk- I think the County Council in this matter has shown a remarkable want of ability or inclination to deal with our emergency and provide for the public convenience. Why not have at once, so soon as the bridge was destroyed, sought, out some narrow spot in the river andl thrown a plank across as a temporary provision ? From warm sunshine, to quite an un>reasonable extent, we have now had mora than a week of drizzling rain and fog,, making it miserable to be either indoors or out. ■
