October 13. Three boys of ages ranging from 14 to 1G left their homes on Saturday morning, taking with them a horse, arms, and ammunition. Nothing has been heard of them since, but it is supposed that they are in the Wairarapa district. The police are making enquiries. . The lunatic who escaped from the , asylum yesterday is still at large. ' DUNEDIN. October 12. At the Sussex Hotel last night, Mr.'E. Wilson, late of the railway department, was presented with a gold medal and a purse of fifty sovereigns in acknowledgment of the part he took in the recent agitation re reduced pay. A man- ejected from the White Hart Hotel last night used a knife upon the landlord and night porter, inflicting flesh wounds. He was brought up at the Court to-day, but the case was remanded. A letter having appeared in one of the papers referring to the rumored change of Magistrates, and reflecting on Mr. Beswick's capacity and impartiality to sit at Rangiora, a number of the bar and residents torday took occasion at the Rangiora Resident Magistrate's Court to disavow any sympathy with the opinions expressed. Mr. Beswick was sitting on the Bench. About 10 last night, the shop of Sainuel Stewart, pawnbroker, whigh ja paptpf his dweliingvhouse, was broken into by the shutters and front window being smashed. Five' gold watches and a gold brooch, which were hanging in the window, valued at about L6O, were stolen. The .thieves decamped before they could be seen, but information was speedily given to the police. He being compelled to surrender, the Magistrate declined the application. A larse quantity of trout ova is being visrributed in the country districts. The Auckland Meat Preserving Company is rapidly extending operations. Shipments are principally made to the country sawmills, gum fields, and the South Sea Islands. Their prices are 30 per cent, below the imported article. The plant : is capable of turning out 6000 tons (?) weekly. ; The Auckland Society of Arts will hold its annual exhibition in March. TIMARU. October 13. A girl named Greaves, or Green, aged 17, was charged to-day with a larceny of L 4 belonging to a widow lady in Timaru. The accused, who was formerly an inmate of the Christchurch Orphanage, represented herself as a governess, and repaid the widow's hospitality by stealing the money during her absence, and decamping to Dunedin. As the girl refused to plead, she was remanded till Saturday.
