During the sitting a long letter was read from Mr. Patrick Ford setting out a claim for certain moneys' alleged to be due to him in respect of work performed in the tunnel where a fatal accident occurred some time since. During the discussion which ensued it was mentioned that' on the occasion of the accident Mr. Ford >vas injured, and tho Council had had tl]e work completed by day labor, It was also stated that the accident was occasioned by disobeyauce of the Engineer's instructions with regard to the removal of the temporary timbers. The North .School Cadets, under command of Captain Lindsay, were inspected this morning by Acting-Major Sumpter. There was a capital attendance, the parade state being as follows : —1 Captain, I lieutenant, 1 sub-lieutenant, 5 sergeants, and 67 cadets ; total 73.. After inspection, Major Sumpter pallpd the officers "and ii on -comrnl3s ion e d officers in turns to the front, and ordered them to put the company through a' number of manoeuvres, all of which were performed in a manner alike creditable to officers and cadets. At the close of the drill, Major Sumpter complimented the corps upon their high state °f fcfijciency, said it yef>ected great credit upon the officers, cadets, and their instructor. The Major then intimated his intention of presenting a handsome volume to the bust drilled cadet of the year. Ai thfi Resident Magistrate's Court today, before I'. Vf, I-ar.kpr, Esq., lt.M., Elizabeth Cover, for allowing one' heifer tq wander at large, was fined 3s. James White, for allowing one horse and cow to wander at large, was fined Cs. Samuel Lintern was charged, on the information of Thomas Falconer, with having used insulting language. The evidence of the complainant havjng beep further hearing of the case was" adjourned till Friday next, when a cross summons will also be he?rd.
