It is a noticeable feature of the times that a number of small contractors have entered the field since thesniashing of a few big ones. The tenders, accepted are :—S. Doig, 305 2s 6d and L33G 6s 6d; Alex. M'Laren, L 224; Andrew M'Laren, L 13 5; P. Corcoran, L 29 1; total, 135195. Smith's large boarding-house hud another narrow escape from fire at 12.30 yesterday morning. Some members of the Brigade were quickly on the spot, find got the fire under. Owing to there being no fire bell the alarm has to be given by means of the school bell. The appmeh to it being somewhat difficult, some timo elapsed before the engine arrived, a circumstance which might have resulted in serious loss.
We had a splendid fall of rain las' night. The crops in this district are looking splendid.§
