WELLINGTON. September 15, Mr. Sidey, auctioneer, has called a meeting of his creditors. The unsecured liabilities are stated to be under LSOO. At the Supreme Court, Henry Clifford, for perjury, was sentenced to twelve months' hard labor, and Charles W. Nicholson, burglary, to four years. The new revised schedule under the Property Assessment Act has been gazetted. It is very clear and easy of comprehension. The time for returning the forms is extended to the 2qth of October. Dr. Lemon has received the following cables from Cape jervis No communication with the Sorata this morning. The pumps are working all right, but do not appear to make any difference. A tug left with the liulk for Adelaide about midnight, the sea is smooth.—2 p.m.— The pumps are still at work. The after hold is nearly dry, but the pumps are unable to reduce the water in main aud fore holds. The body of a man was found floating in the harbor this morning. Jt is supposed to be that of a man named Sullivan who has been missing since the 4tli. Joseph Roberts for attempting to rob the till of the Royal Hotel, was sentenced to four weeks. The Government hfis written the Council asking them to take over the management of the Hospital and Charitable Aid, including the Benevolent Institution, the Government to pay half cost ; also 10 per cent, of subsidies for nine months. The Hospital Committee of Council recommend that this arrangement should be acceded to.

September Xi The Local Industries Committee offer a priae of L 5 for the best sample of twine for string binder made from New Zealand grown fibre, and shown at next agricultural exhibition ; also three guineas for the best exhibition of pickles, and three guineas for best preserved fruits or jams of colonial production. Mr. Toomer, a member of the Committee, offers five for the best exhibit of colonial leather. Two householders at J£aiapqi, who had persi3tontlj' refused to send their children to school, were brought to Court by tho Committeo. The Magistrate ordered the children to be sent regularly, and the costs of the present action to bo paid. In future offenders would be more severely dealt with. • September 15. At a public meeting at Lyttelton last night, it was resolved to accept the Government terms for the formation of a Naval Brigade, without the usual capitation grant. Mr. Murdoch, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, returned from Fiji yesterday. Among the New Zealand passengers by the Sorata was Mr. C. E. M'Vey Thomson.

HAMILTON. September 15. The Waikato Times announces the finding of rich quartz between Ngaruavvahia and Whatawhata.

NEW PLYMOUTH. Sejnember 15. The Constabulary are expecting to make a move shortly from the camp, when eighty men and three officers will be stationed at the township of Mania, near to that portion of the plains which is to be offered for sale. There has been a rumor about town to-day that some active operations were about to take place, for all the mounted men from White Cliffs have passed through singly half a mile apart, as if wishing .to avoid being noticed as they passed along.

TIMARU. September 15. John Leishman has been remanded to Chrisichurch on a charge of garrotting a man in June last, and robbing him of a watch. The watch had been sold in Timaru, and Leishman was traced to Green Island, where he was arrested.
