Business in the groin market during the week has bc-n very dntl, and we have not heard of a single transaction worthy of note.* The difficulty of obtaining freights, even at an advance, hu had some effect upon the market, tending to lessen a desire to speculate. Prices) remain very much the same as last week, except that potatoes have weakened in value, and are now quoted at from LI 5s to U lOj per ton. Butter also shows a alight declin-r. The following are the prices Wheat, 4* to -Ist 3d per bushel: oats. Is (id to U tOd per bushel : barley (fowls' feed). Is tfd to 2a per btishel; malting, none offering; bran, L 3 per ton ; chaff (oaten hay), L 3; straw, L2 "» per ton ; field peas. 3a tid per bnshel ; potatoes, 2->3 to 30s per ton ; butter, fresh, lid; salt, 7d; cheese, 6sd; hams, Is ; bacon, lid. Coal and firewood are quoted as follows :—Newcastle eoal, L2 5a per ton ; Auckland coal, 303 per ton ; Shag Point, 24s per ton ; Kaitangata, 30s per ton ; firewood, 36s per cord.
DUNEDIN. (BY TELEGRAPH-) September 10. Good sample of milling wheat, 4s 4d to 4s 7d ; fowls' wheat, 2s 6d to 3s ; feed oats, la to Is 6d; milling, Is 6d to Is Sd ; malt barley, 2a 9d to 3s sd; feed, Is 9d to 2a tid ; potatoes, L2 5s ; grass hay, L--10a * oaten hay, L 3; medium wheat, 3a 9(1 to 4a ; chaff, L2 15s; straw, L2; bran, L 3 10s; pollard, L 4 10s; flour, LlO 10s to Lll ; oatmeal, L 9 10a ; pearl barley, LIS; onions, 7s 6d to 8a; cheese, sd; bacon, rolled, Ud ; aides, do, Sid (grain fed); hams, 9id.
AUCKLAND. (BY TELEGRAPH.) September 10. Business is unchanged ; steady and quiet. General transactions are limited to purchases of a hand-to-mouth character, but business is sound, and on the whole satisfactory. The stock and share business i 3 duller than for months past. Stocks of (general produce are plentiful; potatoes, overstocked, and some Lave been sold at the cost to import them. Oats are well supplied, but the market ia firm. A line of coast maize changed hands at 3a 4d, and prices range from 3s 3d to 3a tid ; Fijian and second quality is quoted at 3s to 3a 3d; first-class is almost out of the market. and worth 3s 6d. Holdere of Sydney maize are asking 3a tid, it being in limited supply.
TIMARU. To-day's Herald say 3 : —" The grain market continues inactive, and no alteration ia reported in last week' 3 quotations. Prime milling oata remain nominally at Is 4d to Is Sd, and wheat 3a 4d to 3s Sd, but no transactions worth recording have taken place. The weather continues favorable for the young crops."
CHRISTCHUECH. (From to-day's Canterbury Times.) The grain market dnring the past week lias been quiet, anil actual bnsiness has been of a restricted nature. As was anticipated, the scarcity of freight has brought the rates down, and a glance at the manifests of the late clearances of vessels for the United Kingdom -will show that advantage ha 3 been taken of the fact in the large shipments of oata and barley. Wheat.—A feu* sales can be reported daring the week at prices folly sustaining previous quotations. C4ood milling is saleable at 4s Id to 4s 2d., and extra prime 4s 3d. lower grades have been sold at 3s 6d to 3s JOd. The enquiry for seed Tuscan has greatly abated. _ Oats.—Fair sates of both milling and feed samples are reported. The former at Is Gd to I« Bd, the latter at Is 4d to Is sd. Inferior quality have been sold at prices varying between Is Id to Is 3d. Barley.—The market for this gram has in no way altered. Best quality is saleable at 3s to 33 3d, and fair malting samples find buyers at 23 Gd to 2s lOd. The demand for lots answering to the latter description has slightly improved, and sales are not so difficultto effect. Feed parcels are quoted at Is 6d to Is 9<L . _ Potatoes have not improved, and the demand continues just as sluggish. Values remam nominally at 20s, but, to quit, a ■concession on this price wouid have to be accepted. Flour is in fair demand at LlO 10s to Lll, according to brand.
