WHARE-KURI RACES.

(from A correspondent > The above races oaw\e off' on Friday last. The day waa which had the effect of bringing together a fair attendance of spectators to witness the several events, which were very well contested, notwithstanding a little grumbling being indulged in as usual at the handicaps. The fair sex mustered strongly on their well-appointed steeds, which added greatly to the attractions of the day. The horses, taken as a wh'ole, showed unmistakeable signs that considerable attention had been paid to them, as their condition showed. Amongst them were conspicuous the grand colt Emerald (a son of Duntroon), Honest Jask, and Prophet. The former carried off the Cup and Forced Handicap easily. The ball was opened by Jean, who won the-Maiden Plate in good style. She also ran a game mare in the Shepherds' Raee, being beaten by Magician by only "a head. The Hack Race was won easily by Pukaki, beating three others. The Consolation was the best contested race of the meeting, as- the Maid and Jack ran looked together from start to finish, and resulted in Jack winning on the post by a head, The judge, stewards, apd starter deserve credit fojf- the manner in which the programme was carried out, and a meed of praise is due to Mr. and Mrs. Cairns for the sumptuous repast provided by them at the Whare-Kuri Hotel, to each and all. The - settling-up was satisfactory, and after a few bottles of champagne were disposed of, and the health of the host and hostess was drunk, all wended their way home, well pleased after the very enjoyable and meeting of 1880. Maiden Plate. Mr. Fraser's Jean (A. M'Kay) ... 1 l£r. Robertson's Actress (Owner) ... 2 Mr. Robertson's Prophet (H. M'Kay) 3 A good start was effected, Jean soon assuming command of affairs, and Prophet bolting at the first turn for home, left her to score an easy win. Whare-Kori Gup Handicap. ' Mr. Goddard's Emerald (H. M'Kay) 1 Mr. Qairn's Maid of Waitaki (J. Green) 2 Mr. Lefevre's Honest Jack (J. Green) 8 After a little fiddling at the post, Mr. Beattie despatched his h,oxsea on equal terms. Honest Jacfe made the running to the half-mile post, where Magician! [ collared him, but was soon supplanted by 'Emerald, who assumed the lead, and at the turn Prophet again bolted for home, and the Maid, improving her position, collared Epierald, but it was only on sufferance, as the colt ran home an easy winner by two lengths. Shepherds' and Working Men's Race. Mr. Gunn's Magician (A. Mr. Fraser's Jean (J. •••. 2. and notwithstanding all tho efforts of Green, he could not pass Magician, who won by a neck. This was a grand race. Hack Race. Mr. Grant's Pukaki (G. Robertson)... 1 Mr. Cairns' Paddy (H. M'Kay) ... 2 Mr. Brown's Gunpowder (Owner) ... 3 At the fall of tho flag, Pukaki assumed the lead, and kept it throughout, and won easily. The others were well up to Paddy at the finish. Forced Handicap. i Mr. Goddard's Emerald (Green) ... X Mr. Cairns' Maid of Waitaki (A. M'Kay) 2 Mr. Lefevre's Honest Jack (J. Green) 3 At the fall of the flag the Maid cut out the running, closely followed by Jack and Emerald, who kept this position to the half-mile-post, when Emerald collared her, and a most exciting race ensued, as both horse's were under the whip, and resulted in Emerald winning by half a length. Consolation- Race. Mr. Lefevre's Honest Jack (Robertson) I Mr. Cairns' Maid of Waitaki (A. M'Kay) 2 A fine start was effected, and both horses ran neck and neck from start to finish, resulting in Jack winning by a bare neck on the post. After this race was over a Scurry waa got up, and a well-contested race ensued between Actress, Boomerang, and Old Bird, the former winning by a length.
