NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Commit£oo of this Society was held last evening at the Secretary's office., Ther® were present—Mr. Milligan (President, in the chair), the Rev. Mr. Todd, Messrs. iVLollison, Mirams, G. S. Allen, . 11, Stevenson, Headland, Ogilvie, and Greenfield. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. The resignation of Mr. J. Macfariano as a member of the Committee was accepted with regret. A, letter was read from Mr. Neil Fleming, hon. treasurer to the Caledonian Society, enclosing cheque for L3l 10a, being half the net proceeds of the entertainment given bv the Caledonian Society in aid of the funds of the local Hospital, and Benevolent Society. It was resolvci that the thanks of the Society be tendered to the Caledonian Society for their substantial donation. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office, intimating: that the Government could not give a subsidy on amounts collected for individual cases of charity, in this instance amounting to L 143 lis 6d, and stating that a vouoher for L 194 4s 6d would be passed for payment . immediately. It was decided that .the annual general 1 meeting should be held in Mr. Greea--1 field's mart on Monday, October 25, at 7.30 p.m. The Secretary was instructed to notify to the master to admit no fresh cases after the 30th inst., and that any inmates on that date were not to be turned out. The Secretary was authorised to advertise for contracts for six months' sopplies, to he sent in in time for next meeting. The Barrackmaster's report for August was read stating that six children remained in the institution, and that eight domestic servants had been admitted into the Servants' Home, of whom six had obtained situations. The receipt was acknowledged of a gift of clothing from Mrs. Sutherland. The Society's oottages had been inspected, and found in a fair state of repair. Measrs. J. and T. Meek wrote—- " Having heard that there is, great distress at present in Oamaru, we will be glad to present your Society with, say, eight 50's of flour and eight 25's of oatmeal each month for the next four months, to be distributed as may be deemed best by tie Society." The offer was accepted with thanks. The report of the Visiting Committco was read and adopted. The Committeo, amongst other things, recommend that, the following articles be not supplied by the storekeepers to persons receiving' relief, unless specially ordered by tha Visiting Committee : Wines, spirits, beer, tobaoco, preserved fish, do frwits, do meats, jams, jellies, marmalade, cheese, eggs, ham, bacon, dried fruits, confectionery, biscuits, perfumery, and all other goods not absolute necessaries of life. Accounts to the amount of- L 79 19s 8u were passed for payment, subject to the approval of the Visiting Committee. The Visiting Committee for the month of September are Messrs. Mollison and Stevenson. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanka to the Chairman.
