MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
The first election of Councillors nnder the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, took place to-day, but failed to create any very great amount of intesest. The only excitement occasioned was that produced by the almost superhuman efforts of a few ratepayers to secure sufficient candidates In no case were more candidates obtained! than were required, while in the case o£ Thames Ward, owing to the rejection of the nomination of Mr. John M'Combe, explained elsewhere, only two candidates were nominated. Particulars of the nominations for the several wards are given under separate heads. THAMES WARD. The nominations of candidates for this Ward were received at Mr. John Hardy's office, Mr. W. H. Dansey being the lieturning Officer. There was only a small attendance of ratepayers. The followihg gentlemen were nominated and declaredduly elected : Mr. John Hardy, proposed by Mr. Norman Lane, and seconded by Mr. Matthew Grant. Mr. George Augustus Sutton, proposed by Mr. Alexander Kerr, and seconded by Mr. James Familton. Mr. John M'Combe was nominated by Messrs. A. Kerr and A. S. Otterson, but, acting under the advice of the Corporation Solicitor (Mr. Balmor) the Returning Officer declined to accept the nomination, on the ground that the properties in respect of which the candidate was enrolled were not of the rateable value of L 25, as required by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876. SEVERN WARD. The nominations of candidates for this Ward were received at the Oddfellows Hall, Coquet-street. Mr. J. F. Crawford was the Returning Officer. The attendance was very small, and the proceedings only lasted a few minutes. The following gentlemen were nominated : Mr. William Jones Smith, proposed by Mr. W. H. S. Roberts and seconded by Mr. John Hardy. Mr. Robert Blair, proposed by Mr. JHardy and seconded by Mr. Alexander Kerr.
Dr. Harry Archibald de Lautour, pro* posed by Dr. Albert I. Garland, seconded by Mr. John Hardy. There being only the required number of candidates, the Returning Officer declared the gentlemen named duly elected.
HIGH WAKIX The attendance at the South School, where the nominations of candidates for the representation of this ward were re* ceived, was very small. Mr. Thorny Ferens acted as Returning Officer, »■ announced the nominations of the folio*'" ing gentlemen : Mr. Alfred Sclanders Otterson, proposed by Mr. John Shennan, and seconde by Mr. Richard Butt. f Mr. John J. Spence, proposed Richard Butt, and seconded by Mr. J° Shennan. Mr. Alfred Jas. S. Headland, by Mr. William M'lntosh, and seconded by Mr. John T. Smith. , . Only the required number of Candida being nominated, the Returning u ® declared the gentlemen named a I elected.
JETTY WARD. The nominations of candidates for representation of this Ward were f® 4 ® 1 . at Mr. Collis' store, Mr. W. Spain being the Returning Officer. The atten » was exceedingly meagre.
