August 23. The cutter Fawn has turned up at the Heads. A boat supposed to belong to the Birrell was picked up this morning. CHRISTCHURCH. August 21. Intelligence from the country districts shows that considerable damage was done by yesterday's gale, but not of a serious nature. August 22. The following is the team selected to play for Canterbury against Otago:— Hamersley, B'Auvergne, Mill ton, Potts, Bolton, Harman, Rqtherfqrd, Shireff, L, Ollivier (forwards), Cotterell, A. Ollivier, Grigg, Anderson, and Efelmore (backs), Parker and Wachsmann (emergencies). There are only three of these who do not belong to Christchurch. August 23. A man, whose name is unknown, has been drowned in Broken River, near Castle Hill, on the West Coast road. O'Connor, the well-known pedestrian, gives an exhibition to-night at the Qddr fellows Hall previous to his depart i}re fqr Australia. Three ladies attempted to leave a tram car to Papanui on Saturday night while it was in motion. Two of them sugceeded, but the third was severely shaken, The prisoner Patrick Moss, who was severely hurt at the Lyttelton Gaol during the late gale, is expected to recover. INVERCARGILL. August 21.
