We have reason to beliefs that Mr. W. L. Rees has been invited by the constituency of Waikaia to offer himself for election to the seat rendered vacant by the death of Mr. George Ireland, and that he will leave Wellington for the South on Wednesday next. It is probable that in order to lose no time, and to enable the new member to take his seat in the House before tlie close of the session, that the writ will be forwarded and returned by wire, and that Mr. Horace Bastings will assist Mr. Rees during the election. It is not known yet whether or not there will be opposition, but probably if Mr. Rees i 3 returned the political situation may assume quite an altered aspect. It is not surprising that there ia considerable enthusiasm in Parliamentary circles over the event, for Mr. Rees is viewed as just the stamp of man for such a period na this. If his ture should terminate successfully it is hoped that he will figure in the House in about a fortnighr. He would be the means of inspiring new life into the part'.*, and if that party should decide to follow his lead, we would not be surprised, in the event of his re t ul'll, if "the session virtually made a fresh departure. Tim dry b ones of parties would be imbued v. i'.li new life and vigor. In any ca--:e his knowledge of the political history of the past, combined with his undoubted ability .and oratorical powers, would create such a panic in the ranks of the Government supporters and confidence in the Opposition camp as would revolutionise the programme which it is intended :;hall bring the (session to a close at the end of the month. We hope that Mr. Rees will become a candidate, be successful, and prove u. tower of strength and usefulness. Never were such men more urgently rcjuired than now.
