j (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION,) WELLINGTON. A.ugust 13It is probable that an official inquiry will take place into the loss of the schooner Sarah and Mary in Tory channel. DUNEDIN. August 14. At the City Police Court William Felton was charged with stealing a cheque for LIOO under peculiar circumstances. The prosecutor, George Worsdell, and accused met at Milton, whpra. they had been gambling together. Worsdell and a young woman to whom Felton was engaged travelled by train from Milton. At the Dunedin station they were joined by Felton. It is alleged that Felton got possession of the cheque while prosecutor was drunk, and it was cashed by him, The pass was remanded tijl Mpnday. The charge against George M'Gustie and Thomas Taylor, for keeping an illicit still at Blueskin was remanded till Wednesday. CHRISTCHURCH. August 13. Archibald Wilson, overseer on the West Coast road, was committed for trial to-day for stealing L§47 §3 from Government, substantial bail being allowed, August 14. There have been 561,007 sacks of wheat and 190 sacks of flour exported from Lyttelton to the United Kingdom during the present season. The corresponding quantities- from Melbourne were—526,431 sacks of wheat and 70,029 sacks of flour. A considerable number of men are pro- j ceeding to the Okarito goldfield, Over 1

GISBORNE. August 14. Nahoware, a native committed for trial some time ago, escaped yesterday morning by scaling the walls. He left word with some of his relatives that the reason.-for him running away was that the gaoler's accommodation was insufficient. So soon as alterations take place in the supply of food and blankets, he promised to write to the Magistrate and return to gaol. The prisoner has not yet been captured. AUCKLAND. August 13. A sad accident occurred off Aratipu at noon to-day, four persons being drowned by the upsetting of a sailing boat in a squall—Cole, of Minister of Marine notoriety ; Allwright, a clerk at Kopuru ; Wilson, a clerk at Mangarawhere; and John Fielder, a carpenter of Mangarawhere, were drowned ; the fifth, Sims, got ashore. Wilson was married, and has a family in Canterbury. NEW PLYMOUTH. August 13. On inquiry held to-day into the case of the stranding of the schooner Vogel at Waitara, the evidence went to show that the vessel was not supplied with proper gear. The captain had his certificate returned, at the same time the Court blaming the owner of the vessel for not keeping her properly equipped for sea. : TIMARU. August 13. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the following resolution was carried That Messrs. Sutter, Moody, and B,utherford be appointed a deputation to proceed to Wellington with the object of urging Government to place a sum of money on the Estimates this session to complete the new railway station at Timaru and sidings ; also to call for tenders for completing the railway line from Albury to Fairlie Creek with as little delay as possible.
