So no good is to come out of the length} 7 reports of tlie multitude of Royal Commissions. " The chances are that little more will be heard of the Royal Commission reports, and the Government seem disinclined to say what will be done regarding them." Thus writes the correspondent of a couple of Government organs. This intimation is no matter of astonishment to us. Months ago he predicted that the labors of the several Commissions would be in vain, and that their recommendations would not be given effect to. This was one of the reasons that actuated us in opposing the appointment of the Commissions, We declared that they would most surely end in a waste of public money, and our contention has been proved correct by the results. The Commissioners have certainly made many valuable recommendations, but as the Ministry do not possess either the power or the inclination to put them into pracrice, the Colony would have been about LIO,OOO richer had the Commissions never been created. As it is, a number of very estimable gentlemen have been rushing hither and thither gathering information, and now they are placed in the very unenviable position of no heed being paid to the recommendations that form the natural outcome of their labors. They may fairly be classed as weak-voiced orphans crying pitifully in a wilderness. Of course Ministers will promise to consider the reports during the recess, and equally of course they will meet Parliament next session without having formed any definite opinions as to the best mode of giving effect to the recommendations of the Commissioners. They will await the decision of some secret caucus of their friends before giving any foim to the measures necessary to effect reforms, the necessities for which are recognised by all save the dunderheads yclept his Excellency's responsible advisers.
