WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following is the Qonolusion of our report of yesterday's meeting of the Couuty Council IVJr, Peter Aitchison waited on the Council, submitting a plan of the Waikoura Creek as it runs through his property, and requesting the Council's permission for him to clear out the oreek at his own expense. Mr. Aitohisoji stated that Judge Williams had distinctly said that the matter canae under the control of the Council, while Mr. T. W. Parker, 8..M., had given a judicial opinion that Mr. Aitchison was not entitled to clean out the drain, as it was under the Council's control. ' It was decided that the Council take no j action in the matter.

Mr. Aitchison expressed his intention to appeal to the Executive Council, and thanked the Board for the hearing they had given him. Messrs. Hille and Cain wrote stating that the settlers higher up the river were anxious that they should remove the punt from Kurow about eight miles higher up to answer the traffic of that district. They had obtained an estimate of the traffic, and found that it would be very limited, and that it would not cover working expenses and wear and tear of ferry. They wished to know if the Waitaki CountyCouncil, in conjunction with the Waimate County Council, would gran,t a subsidy to the proposed ferry.—lt was decided that the matter stand over. I

Letters were reqd from Mr. J. F. Heckler with reference to the erection of a wire-rope bridge over the Ohau, stating that in company with Mr. Stronaoh, the

: TJ —=====s^ writer had -waited upon theM&uiit C?ooV Road Board, and ascertained that the Board considered it rather an undertaking for the Geraldine County, but would not oppose it, and would press on the County the necessity for the bridge. ' On the motion of Mr. Thomson, it was resolved that the Council should still adhere to the former resolution that the Council will bear half the cost, and the Council's Engineer inspect and report on the cost, the Geraldine County Council to be advised accordingly. The following resolution, forwarded by the Patea County Council, came ut» for-further consideration : —"That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable that County Councils should be constituted Land Boards. Being elective, they are more likely to push on the sale and occupation of the waste lands of the Colony than the Land Boards as at present con. stituted ; and that the Chairman com. municate with the other County Councils asking their co-operation in the matter." After some discussion, it was resolved on the casting vote of the Chairman, that the Council should take no action in the matter.

Messrs. Robertson and Biggar wrote stating that they had made an error in compiling their tenders for contracts No. 99, 100, and requesting that the Council would take the matter into favorable consideration.—Resolved that the writers be informed that their tender must be ad« hered to for contract 99, and that tlio Council accepts their tender for motal l or contract 100, the metalling to bo done before the gravelling contract. Williams, L3l 8s ; "(3) formation and gravelling bo. tween Otekaike and Doctor's Creek, J, Counihan, LO7 13s ; (4) further formation and gravelling between Otekaike and Doctor's Creek, T. Maclay, L 39 10s; (5) formation and gravelling between Duq. troon and Otekaike, J. Counihan, L 44 4s; (6) formation and gravelling east of Wai. koura Creek, J. Counihan, L 4 2; (ty formation with metal between Big Hill Creek and Waiareka Church, T. Korr, Ll6B 5s 4d ; (8) metalling road to 'Whitstone siding, W. J. Williams, LBllßs. The Inspector's report was read and ap. proved. On the report of the Engineer with reference to the Livingstono footbridgo being read, Messrs. Duncan, Johnston, and W. Sutherland were appointed a com. mittee to inspect and select a site, and tenders for the erection of the bridge wero ordered to be called in time to be opened at next meeting. Accounts to the amount of L 961 4s 5d were passed for payment, and the Council rose.
