LATEST HOME AND FOREIGN NEWS. {REUTER : 3 TELEGRAM. P3R PRESS ASSOCIATION) London, August 9. Several masked men shot Mr. Boyd, Crown Solicitor, and his two sons yesterday at Kilkenny. The former is dying, one of his sons is in a precarious state, and the other is slightly wounded.
Three per cent, consols, 98|-. The Homeward English mails via Brindisi were delivered here to-day. The National Bank of New Zealand pays a 3 per cent, dividend for tlie halfyear.
The hop crop accounts are less favorable, owing to their being partially damaged by excessive rains. Arrived—Orient Company's steamer Cotopaxi, from Australia.
The Board of Trade returns of imports for the past month amount to L 33,375,000, showing an increase of L 3,000,000 compared with last year. The exports for the same period amount to L 20,250,000, showing an increase of L 3,500,000 compared with the corresponding month last year. The Right Hon. Mr. Gladstone has gone to Windsor Castle as the guest of the Dean. August 10. Sir Hercules Hobinson returns to England before proceeding to the Cape as Governor.
Mr. Boyd's son died from the effects of the wounds received in the attack made by masked men at Kilkenny. Several arrests have taken place in the neighborhood in consequence of the murders. Athens, August' 9. Extensive war preparations are being carried on by Greece. The European Powers acquiesce in the mobilisation of the army. Constantinople, August 9. In consequence of refusal on the part of the Albanians to cede Dulcigno, Hussem Pasha, with 2000 Turkish troops, has been ordered to proceed thither for the purpose of enforcirigsurrender.
August 10. The Turkish Government has resolved upon negotiating direct with the Great Powers in regard to rectification of the Greek frontier. New York, August 9. Dr. Tanner, who fasted 40 days, wliicli left him in a very emaciated condition, is now rapidly recovering. AFGHAN WAR. (reuter's telegram per press association.) Calcutta, August 10. Intelligence has been received from Candahav to the 6th inst. General Primrose reports that the citadel is in a complete state of defence, and he is provisioned for 25 days. Ayoob Khan with the bulk of his army is encamped at Kakoran, near Candahar. London, August 10. In the House of Commons to-day the Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, replying to certain remai'ks which had been made regarding the evacuation of Cabul, defended the withdrawal of the British troops from that city. He said it was not now of any political importance that the troops should remain there, and General Stewart had fully concurred in the proposal to remove them.
DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. • (renter's telegram per press association. ) , Adelaide, August 11. The Colonial Treasurer made his financial statement in the Legislative As- . sembly last niglit. He showed that the ; revenue for the last financial year was L 1,831,000, being L 245,000 below the estimate, leaving a deficit balance of L 243,000, exclusive of L 30,000 appearing on the Supplementary Estimates. He estimates the revenue for the present year at L 2,013,000, and- the expenditure at L 1,945,000, leaving a deficit of LI 75,000, which will be covered by new taxes, The latter, however, will be rendered in view of elections which will shortly take place. Melbourne, August 11. M. Soudry, French Commissioner, who was wounded at the Opera House, is a passenger for Europe by the Garonne. Hobart Town, August 11. The Tasmanian Parliament was opened yesterday by the Acting-Gover-nor, who, in his speech on the occasion, announced what measures would be pi'oposed for increase of taxation with a view to augmenting the revenue.
