Some information with reforetiee to trie new Governor of New Zealand may bo interesting, we therefore. q,uote the following from '' Men of the Time" : The Hon. Sir Arthur Hamilton Gordon, K.C.M.G., youngest! son of George, fourth Earl of Aberdeen, sometime Prime Minister of England,, by his second wife Harriet* daughter of the late Hon. John Douglas, was bora November 26th, 1829. In 1854 lie was elected in the Liberal interest for ! Beverley, having defeated Mr. G. W. I Hastings, arid he retained the seat untu the general election of ' 1857, when lie unsuccessfully contested Liskeard against Mr. Ralph Grey, who was afterwards appointed a Commissioner of Customs. Sir Arthur Gordon was assistant private secretary to his father when Foreign Secretary, and also when , Minister; and he was specially attached to Mr. Gladstone's mission to the Indian Islands in 1858. He was appointed Governor of New Brunswick in IS6I i Governor of Trinidad in 1866; and Governor of Mauritius in October, 7, ' In 1871 he was created a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael ana St. George. When the Fiji were created into, a separate Colony* called the' Cplpny of Fiji, Sir- Arthur Gordon wa& appointed its first Governor and Commander-in-Chief, February 4(W*» i 87 5; also Consul-General Commissioner for the Western I™ 3l 1877: He wjv* nominated a Knight Gran Cross of ths Order of St. Michael an St. Geoi-ge in August, 1878.
