The Oamaru Mail. SATURDAY, AUGUST 1880.

We publish elsewhere tin; ■ r .-nipletc report of the Public Works Statement delivered last evening by the Hon. Mr. Oliver. Th'c pressure thus caused up n our space compels us to hold over a large amount of other matter. If anything were wanting to prove the advantages derivable from tLe Oamaru Harbor Works, the case of the brigantine Endeavor might be adduced. This vessel, with a cargo of 45,000 ft. of timber, arrived at Timaru on the 15th July, and was anchored in the roadstead until the 3rd August. During the" whole of this time—l 9 days—she was only able to discharge about two-thirds of her cargo, and on the 3rd instant, her owners probably being disgusted, she sailed for Oamaru with the balance of the timber. She arrived here about mid-clay yesterday, anil by 0 o'clock last evening had discharged the whole of the remainder of her cargo. To-day she loaded up with a cargo of produce, and will probably sail for Wellington this evening. We have no desire to say anything in disparagement of Timaru, for it will some day have a harbor, but we may fairly congratulate the residents of this town upon having gained such a strong advantage over the sister town. Captain Edwin telegraphs : —Bad weather approaching in any direction between east and south and south-west. Glass further fall, with wind backing. Sea will be very heavy within 24 hours, and likely to increase soon. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M., ope man, for having been drunk and disorderly, was fined os., with the option of 24 hours' imprisonment. John Moore, for allowing one horse to wander at large in the town, was fined 45.; and Thomas Patterson, for allowing a mare and foal to commit the same offence against tlie bye»Jas7£, was mulcted in the sum of 10s.
