Invercargill being 3 miles due south of the latitude of the Clutha, the average height above the sea level being 250 feet. The average quality of the soil is equal to any in the Australasian Colonies, and from climatic influences is capable of growing notmerely excellent wheat, but first-class_oats and barley, and j? peculiarly adapted for raising turnips and artificial grasses, thereby enabling the farmer to keep his land in perfect heart by a rotation of cropping; manure his landbyfeedingoff his green crops with sheep and cattle, and keep him independent of a bad market for any particular cereal. AH over the district there is firstclass limestone cropping out to fertilise the land when it may require it. _ Forests _ .of large extent are scattered over it, providing timbers for building and fencing, and coal (lignite and the best brown coals) for fuel averywhere obtainable. The district is furtlier intersected by railways, which open np the great valleys of Aparima, Oreti, and Mataura Rivers ; while a loop line from the Invercargill to Kingston Railway at liuniadem runs tferongh the W aimea Plains and joins the Invercargill to Dunedin main line at Gore, and a line through the Forest Bill District will be constructed shortly. Thus carriage of produce to the seaboard or marbet is easy and cheap from any part of it j and timber, liine, and coal, can be distributed all over the country at a minimum cost. It may be remarked that Invercargill being situated close to Foveaux Straits is exuosed to more rainfall and sudden charges than the interior of the district, only seven miles due north, where the climate is both drier and warmer, tut along the whole seaboard the land is extremely fertile, and much prized for gras3 and root crops. The experience or the few years leads to the conviction that for all-round agriculture the supply of rain by no means exceeds the requirements of the land. This yeat the thermometer at Invercargill has averaged higher than any part of the Middle Island, and most parts of the North Island, while there has been very considerably less rainfall than in any part of the Colony.
