The sum of 500,000 rupees is to be spent in Mauritius iu re-forming the forests which have been destroyed by the settlers. The destruction of the forests is said to have rendered the former salubrity of the island a "thing of the past." In 1879 the deathrate equalled 38.2 per 1000 of the population.
