{PER PRESS ASSOCIATION,) WELLINGTON. August 1. Notwithstanding the heavy downpour of rain yesterday, the football match— Greytown v. Wellington Athletic Club — was played, and ended in a victory for the latter by two goals to nothing. August 2. 4-t the Supreme Court to-day, in the case of the Bank of New Zealand v. Swartz, a claim for L 720, balance of account, judgement was given for plaintiff. The case of Climie v. City Corporation, a claim for L 4700, for commission on a drainage scheme and alleged wrongful dismissal, is proceeding. DUNEDIN. August 2. A free distribution of meat and bread by City tradesmen on Saturday night was largely availed of. Over 40Q loaves were given away. For breach of the Registration Act, in refusing to certify as to the cause of the death of a patient, Dr. Borrows was fined a nominal penalty. CHRISTCHURCH. July 31. A farm of 10 acres at Halswell was sold by auction to-day at L2O an acre after a spirited competition. August 2. The vital statistics for Ghristchurch for July are—Births, 206 ; marriages, 42 ; deaths, 60. A narrow escape from fire occurred at the Garrick Hotel on Saturday night. A bottle of spirits was accidentally broken and caught fire. The flames were extinguished before much damage was done. As an evidence of the increased consumption of Malvern Hills coal, it is mentioned that one pit last month sold 960 tons against 345 tons during July of last year. At an inquest on the body of John Gordon, a verdict of found dead was returned. There was no evidence to show the cause of death.
AUCKLAND. July 31. At the annual meeting of delegates of the Oddfellows Lodges (Manchester Unity), Auckland District, Mr. Qwen Mahon, Provincial Grand Master presided. Mr. H. P. Smith, corresponding secretary, stated that the returns read showed that the Lodges had expended L 1045 14s 4d during the year in sick gifts, and in funerals, L 247. The gain in funds during the year amounted to L 1857 14s od. John Co well died, aged 60. He was one of the oldest settlers in Hew Zealand. He accompanied Houghton on his southern expedition, and also Potatau on his ex-' pedition to Taranaki. He was obliged to leave Kawhai with other Europeans during the first Taranaki war. August 2.
Tho fonnd dead in a street at Otahuhu on Saturday was Rose Ann Stone, aged 4G years. She had been in delicate health for some time, and was seen intoxicated on Saturday evening. . TIMARU. Artgupt 1. The barque Elizabeth Mentis has sailed for London, .villi a full cargo of grain and flour. The Customs duties for July amounted to L 2412, as against L2OBO for the corresponding njonth of last year. Fifty-six b'irths, 14 deaths, and sis marriages were registered in the Timaru district during July.
