RICH GOLDFIELDS ON THE WEST COAST.

(by telegraph.) Wellington, July 24.

The following was received Iv the Minister of Mines from Warden M'Kay at Greymouth : —'' In reply to your telegram of 21st, re finding of gold at Seventeen Mile Beach I have ascertained beyond a doubt that one party of four obtained 2480z3 2dwts 4grs in sixteen working days, and some other parties have made L 7, LB, and L 9 sterling per week. There are about 60 claims on the field more or less payable. The male mining population north of the Grey, from Cobden to Razor Back, is about 370. About 290 of these are at the Seventeen Mile Beach cn the 60 claims before mentioned. By the courtesy of the bank managers here I am enabled to state that, since Ist March last, they have purchased about 3100oz. of gold, which they know came from the Seventeen Mile Beach, besides other parcels which have come from thereabouts, this quantity being purchased principally by special buyers for each bank, and it must be borne in mind that during the period commencing 21st March, preliminary and now constructed works occupy a considerable time ; in fact, some claims are still tunnelling, &c., and nat paying anything yet, although prospecting has proved them auriferous."
