The average quality of the soil is equal to any in the Australasian Colonies, and from climatic influences is capable of growing not merely excellent wheat, but first-clarg oats and barley, and is peculiarly adapted for raising turnips and artificial grasses; thereby enabling the farmer to keep his land in perfect teflrt by a rotation of cropping; manure his land by feedingoff his green crops with sheeD and cattle, and ketp him independent of a bad market far »ny particular cereal. All over the district ttteie js firstclass limestone cropping out to fertilise the land when it may lequira it. _ of large eitenfc jire scattered over it, providing timber* for building and fencing, and coal (lignite and the bcA brown coals) for fuel everywhere obtainable. Thg distriot is further intersected by railways, u open up the great valleys of Aparima, Ofeti, and Mataura Rivers : while a loop line from tbe Invercargill to Kingston Railway at Lumsdem runs through the Waimea Plains and joins the Invercargill to Dnnedin main line at Gore, and a line through the Forest Hill District will ba constructed shortly. The average yield of cereals per acre, taken from the statistics of the Colony for .the years 1573 to IS7B, as compared with Canterbury, are as follow : JXI6 SuDjOinea lauiea temperature at Invercargill, Dunedin, and Christchurch, the commercial centres of the districts. It may be remarked that Invercargill beingsituatedclose to Foveaux Straits is exposed to more rainfall and sudden chaDges than the interior of the district, only seven miles due north, where the climate is both drier and warmer, tut along the whole seaboard the land is extremely fertile, and much prized for grass and root crops. The experience of the last few years leads to the conviction that for all-round agriculture the supply of rain by no means exceeds the requirements of the land. This year the thermometer at Invercargill has averaged higher than any part of the Middle Island, and most parts of the North Island, while there has been very considerably less rainfall t han in any part of the Colony.
