MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly nieeting of tho Council was held last evening, when thero were present—His Worship the Mayor (presiding), and Councillors Smith, Mainland, Townsend, Roberts, Otterson, Headland, Humphrey, 'and Garland. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the outward correspondence was read and approved. A telegram from the Ashburton Town Clerk ,re 6in., 9in., and 12in. waterpipes, and offering the same to the Council at. London current rates, was read and held over. ; . A letter was read from Mr. W. C. Baudihet, accepting the offer of the Council for some bluestone rubble. Mr.; W. Shaw .wrote asking that the Council should send some person to point out bis boundary line oil section 20, block 14, the pegs of the same having disappeared. —lt was resolved that Mr. Sandison point out the boundaries on the section. Permission was granted to Mr. A. Gr. Creagh to lay a glazed pipe under tho footpath in Wansbeck-street, to carry off the overflow from his watertanlcs. A letter was read from Mr. Herbert Edwards, stating that a half-inch service pipe only had been put in for his requirements on sections 3, 4, and 19, block 28, from the mains in Wharf-street, and asking that a; three-quarter-inch pipe be laid instead, as two horses had to be supplied. The writer stated that he was willing to pay the cost of the alteration. Permission was also requested to use a load or two of soil from the banks in Test-street, between Tees and Wharf streets.—lt waa decided that the writer be informed that Council will put a'separate service to the building line of each house as required by the Waterworks Act, and that Mr. Edwa,rds could then continue the service to each house in any manner an authorised plumber may decide. A letter was received from Mr, W„ Milson, calling attention to the hasty manner in which he had been discharged from his position as overseer of reservoir, which he had held from May, 1879, to July, 1880, no complaint having ever been made against him. The writer particularly requested that an investigation o£ his case should be made. Telegrams were received from Ho®. H. J. Miller and S. E. Shrimski, Esq., M.H.R., intimating that the terms of tho Standing Orders of the Upper House should be complied with by publishing three advertisements re Oamaru Waterworks Bill once in each of three consecutive weeks. The report of the Waterworks Committee was read and adopted. It was resolved that Mr. J. G. Robertson's tender of L 29 be accepted for tho bridge at Black Point, recommended by the Waterworks Committee. A long supplementary report by CJo,W-» cillor Roberts was also read. Councillor Otterson pointed 9,ut. tfow necessity of securing tho services of an engineer or competent clerk of works, at a moderate salary. The poposition was discussed, but nothing definite was dono.. It was resolved, on the motion ©f Councillor Humphrey, seconded by Councillor Headland, that tho Waters works Committee, with Councilors Main-' land, Otterson, and tho m&oyer,. be requested to go over the water-race with Mr. Sandison, to examine and roporlt upon the same. The Finance report waa j read and adopted, and, on the suggestion of the Committee, it was decided that in ; future all wagea and salaries he paid by the Town Clerk, The Gas Committee recommended that in future a reduction of Is per 1000 feet be made to consumers on all gas con* sumed over 10,000 feet, payments to be made on the I4th of each month. Councillor Townsend's notice of t&oiion re sliding charges per horse-power for water engines was discussed at very siderable length, but was eventually roferred to a Select Committee, consisting of Councillors Townsend, Headland, Humphrey, and Mainland, to jfeport at special meeting of Council next Thursday. Coxincillor Roberts proposed, and Councillor Smith saoonded, " That Mr. Sandison, Acting Engineer, estimate and report cost of making footpath through Ousc* street lagoon." Carried. The Council adjourned at 11.1Q p.**' with the usual vote of thanks 1 Mayor. _____
