THE MAYOR'S VISIT TO WELLINGTON.
At the meeting of the Municipal Council last evening, the following report from the Mayor was read, the financial portion of which was referred to the Finance Committee : Re Waterworks. —In compliance with a resolution passed at a special meeting of the Council, held on Friday, 2nd inst., I started for Wellington on the sth, arrived there on the 7th, and immediately communicated with the Hon. H. J. Miller, the Hon. 11. Campbell, and Messrs. Shrimski and Jones, the members for this district, and arranged with them to meet the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer, acting on the part of the Government, on the 9th. ;The result of the interview was that we ascertained that, before we could obtain funds for completion of waterworks, it was necessary to procure fresh borrowing powers by passing a Bill through Parliament in order to create security, and that the Government would render assistance in this being done. Notice was given that evening by Mr. Jones of the introduction of such Bill, which will be passed through all its stages without delay. Copy of Bill herewith. Re' Post Office. —In company with Mr. Shrimski, M.H.R., I waited on the Secretary to the Post Office, who promised to consult the Solicitor-General with a view to have the debenture made of a more prominent nature. 1 RejFresh Loan.—ln company with Mr. Jones, M.H.R., I waited' on the gentlemen jentrasted with the investment of various trust funds, and arranged that application should be forwarded from this Council, and advances obtained so soon as our security was legally created. Re Petition.—l waited on the UnderSecretary, who undertook to have the Governor's assent gazetted on the 31st inst.,i thus doing away with the necessity of having a double election for members of Council.
In! conclusion I beg to say that I received every possible assistance from our members in both Houses, also from Mr. de Lautour, M.H.R., to whom the tnanks of this Council are especially due. The thanks of the Council were accorded to the Mayor for the attention given by him to the affairs of the Council during his recent stay in Wellington. Councillor Headland moved, and Councillor; Smith seconded, "That a letter be written tendering the thanks of the Council to C. A. de Lautour, Esq., M. H.R, for the valuable assistance rendered. by him to the Mayor of Oamaru while : the latter was in Wellington on Council business. "
