; LATEST HOME AND FOREIGN NEWS. ; (REUTER ! S telegram, per press association) London, July 15. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is LI 6,500,000. New Zealand securities are unchanged. New Zealand and Adelaide breadstuffs are quiet at last quotation. Australian tallow is firm. July 16. The Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, made a statement in the House of Commons to-day, in the course of which he said he was of opinion that England should bear a substantial proportion of the cost of the Afghan war, and that the whole burden should not be thrown upon India. A meeting was held to-day, at which many members of the House of Commons expressed themselves in favor of the Bill granting compensation to Irish tenants, which had been introduced by the Government. July 17. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,850,000 quarters. Eor the American wheat harvest the prospect is favorable. The House of Commons has adopted an amendment on the Bill introduced by the Bight Hon. "VV. E. Gladstone for granting compensation to Irish tenants, which will have the effect of not relieving the landlords from paying compensation if they refuse the terms asked

by the tenants, without they (the landlords) offer some reasonable alternative. The cricket match which was commenced on Thursday between the Australians and eighteen of the "Wernett Club at Oldham, in Lancashire, was concluded to-day, and resulted in another victory for the Australians in one innings with 21 runs to spare. The Australians in their first innings scored 119 runs, M'Donnell being the highest 1 scorer with 53 runs, after which he was bowled out. The "W ernett Club team in their first innings scored only 38, and being so far behind their opponents they had to follow on. In their second attempt they were a little more successful, but were all disposed of for 60, and the Australians thus won the match as stated. In the first innings of Wernett team Spofforth took 11 wickets. The wicket was very dead. The attendance of the public at the match day was very large. News has been received from Afghanistan that Abdul Kahman, who was offered the Ameership, has crossed Hindoo Koosh, and is now believed to be on his way to Cabul.

News comes to hand from Afghanistan that the native infantry under Shere Ali, ruler of Candahar, recently deserted near Girish, where they had been despatched to oppose the advance of Ayoub Khan. A force of British txxjops, operating with Shere Ali, pursued and routed them, and recovered the guns they had taken. It is understood that the position of affairs renders it necessary for the British to remain in Candahar until Shere Ali's. position is secure. Athens, July 17. The Greek Government have sent to the Great Powers a reply to their collective note embodying the decision of the Berlin Conference in regard to the Turko-Greek dispute. The reply intimates the acceptance by the Greek Government of the decision of the Conference as to the territory to be ceded to Greece for the rectification of her frontier. Constantinople, July 17. Several Germans have recently been appointed by the Porte! to high posts in the Turkish Foreign, Finance, and War Departments.
