The average quality of the soil is equal to any in the Australasian Colonies, and from climatic inflnences ia capable of growing not merely excellent wheat, bnt first-class pats and barley, and is peculiarly adapted for raising turnips and artificial grasses, thereby nnqhlinrr the farmer to beep his land in perfect heart fay a rotation of cropping; inanure hialand by feeding off his green crops with sheep and cattle, and fre p him independent of a bad market for any particular cereal. AH over the district there js firstclass limestone cropping out to fertilise the land when it may require it. Forests of large extent are scattered over it, providing timbers for building and fencing, and coal (lignite and the best brown coals) fop fuel everywhere obtainable. The district is further intersected by railways, which open up the great valleys of Aparima, Oreti, and Mataura Rivers ; while a loop line from the Invercargill to Kingston Railway at Lnmsdem runs through the Waimea Plains and joins the Invercargill to Dunedin main line at Gore, and a line through the Forest Hill District will be constructed shortly. It may be remarked that Invercargillbeingsituafcedologe toFoveaux Straits is exposed to more rainfallsnds fjdden changes than the interior of the district, only seven miles due north, where the climate ia both drier and warmer, but aloDg the whole seaboard the land is extremely fertile, and much prized for grass and root crops. The experience of the last few years leads to the conviction that for all-round agriculture the supply of rain by no means exceeds the requirements of the land. This year the thermometer at Invercargill has averaged higher fchap any part of the Middle Island, and most parts of the North Island, while there has been very considerably les3 rainfall than in any part of the Calflny, AVERAGE TEMPEKATORE, (Southland.
