POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) (FKOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). Wellington, July 10. Colonel Scratchley's report says that for the defence of Nelson, Timaru, Oamaru, and other places, which are not large enough, .to require local defences, small bodies of riflemen provided, with field artillery, should fulfil the double purpose of keeping hostile vessels at a distance' from the shore with their guns and also> of resisting predatory attacks on land, undertaken with the object of levying-; contributions. The fact . of. such am organisation being in existence would probably be in itself a security against any attempt being made of the nature contemplated. [from our special correspondent*! Wellington July 10. It is very probable that Mr. M'Caugham's motion in favor of holding the next session of Parliament at Christchurch will bo carried, but it is not likely that it will bp carried into effect by the Government, as the cost would very materially nullify the. attempt being made to economise.
