Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day that bad weather is approaching from any direction between northeast and north and west, and that the glass will further fall, The railway line south of the Otepopo tunnel is still blocked by a landslip of some thousands of tons. As fast as the men employed clear the line to some extent a further slip takes place. When this state of things will end' and the line be cleared it is impossible say, The Oriental Exhibition was again very well patrggiged yesterday and last evening. A meeting of the Oamaru Schools Committee will be held on Jfoiday evening, at 7 o'clock.. , The regular meeting of the Municipal Council will be held this evening, when the revision of the citizens' roll and the consideration of the bye-laws will form part of the business, It is intended by the QaijWH- Artillery Corps to obtain a supply of full dress unir forms, in order that new members may at once be supplied with them. The uniforms will be of the pattern decided upon by Col. Pearce, an effort being made, we believe, to have the whole of the New Zealand Regiment of Artillery dressed in the same description ftf uniform. A correspondent residing fj,t Maheno asks : In view of the telegraph office wtyich hag lately been erected at our railway station being opened to the public for the transmis? sion of messages, would it not he a step ip the right direction, in these days of fptpenchr ment, to remove the post-office to the same place, where there is ample accommodation and where the telegraphist could manage both departments? This would effect a saving to the country, and prove a convenience to the public.
We are again compelled to hold over letten §TMails, for Australian Colonies, per Botomahana, close at 11.30 a.m. on Friday. 9th inst., at the Bluff. Telegrams will be accepted at this office accordingly. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Alfred Lodge, ISTo. G, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Coquet-street, last evening, when there was a good attendance. The following officers were duly installed N.G., Bro. T. John Bunting; V.G., Bro. E. Lennie; Sec., Bro. R. J. Keys; Treas., Bro. E. G. Lane; P.G., Bro. W. H. Kelly. The appointment of the subordinate officers was then proceeded with, as follows ; —R.S. to N.G., Bro. Thomas; L.S. to N.G., Bro. T. Williamson ; R.S, to Y.G., Bro. King; 1.G., Bro. P. Nelson; Wdn., Bro. R. Blair; Con., Bro, E. G. Lane; R.S.S., Bro. Moodie; L.S.S., Bro. Messenger. Votes of thanks were heartily accorded to the outgoing officers, which were appropriately acknowledged, and the Lodge was closed in due form at 10 p.m. -
The adjourned meeting of the Waiareka Road Board was held yesterday, when there present—Messrs. Gilchrist (chairman), Barr, Elder, Isdale, Little, Jackson, and Reid. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, a' letter was read from the Engineers, stating that, owing to the illness of Mr. Oliver, he would be compelled to discontinue his cities jq connection with the Board for a'few weeks, and stating the arrangements made for the transaction of business during his absence, which were approved of. The County Clerk wrote intimating that the Council had taken over the road-line to Elderslie station. Re letter from Messrs. Paterson and Son, the Inspector will -bp instructed to ergpt footrbridgep as applied for, and other matters alluded to in the letter were referred to the members for the sub-division for report. The Rev. Mr. Gifford waited on the Board to urge the opening of road-lins from Clielmer-street to Cave Valley, and it was decided that, so soon as the solicitors are satisfied as to the Board's title to the land, tenders be called for the works referred to in the Engineers' report. The Board's solicitors wrote with reference to the transfer of road-lines (Lees to the Queen), and it was decided that, so soon as Mr. Lees furnished the Board with certificates of title for such portions of the land as are under the Land Transfer Act, such certificates be deemed satisfactory for the portions "In question. The results of the annual elections were reported by the Returning Officers. The Treasurer reported the renewal of the sinking fund until next January, which was approved. The Engineers' report on Coal Pit Road was ordered to stand over until next meeting. It was resolved that the attention of tl\e County Cqujicil bg drawn te the volume of water at the crossing of Waiareka Creek ; also to the fact that the approach to the bridge on road' ■ "line over Slatey Creek had been washed away. Several aocounts having been passed for payment, the Board rose. The usual monthly meeting of the Kakanui Road Board was held yesterdey afternoon, at the office, Tyne-street, when there were present —Mr. J. C. Gilchrist (chairman), and Messrs, T. Stpvensoii, J, R, Elder, T. Walker, D. Booth, W. Manning, A. Hedley, J. S. Holmes, R. Morton, J. M'Pherson, A. Aitkenliead, and G, M'Donald. After the usual preliminary businsss, the following letters were read : From Messrs. Barr and Oliver (engineers), re arrangements for the transaction of business during Mr. Oliver's illness.—From Miy O. W. Oldham, Kakanui, requesting the Board's reconsideration of their refusal to construct crossing opposite his section i it was dec : ded to let the matter stand over until next meeting,'to allow of an enquiry being held.—From Messrs. Kenyon and Hoskins (solicitors), Dunedin, on behalf of Mr. Fairfax Fenwick, re issue, of Crown grant for closed road-line in South Oamaru ; the resolved that the firm be informed that they ape qf qpinion that tl}e matter comes under the 96th section of the Public Works Act, and that, should the Governor bo memorialised on the subject, the Board will give every assistance, but decline to bear any expense connected therewith.— From Mr. Brydone, on behalf of the N.Z. and A.L. Co., asking for the formation of two road-lines on Totara Estate ; it was resolved to call for tenders for road-line near wool-shed, ?,nd tl;at tjje pvopQsed road-ling to be re-opened as entrance to Totara railway siding be inspected by the members of the Lambourne sub-division and the Engineers.—From Mr. Brydone, asking that a plan of new road-line in Block, IX., Oamaru district, be given to Messrs. Accounts to the amount of L 214 3s 2d were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
