(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. July 8. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Robert Atkinson, formerly a Customs officer at the Thames, and a wellknown petitioner to the House of Representatives, was charged with horsewhipping. Mr. M'Kellar, Colledtor of Customs here, in the Customs House this morning. The supposed cause is through some evidence given before a Select Committee, and with a view to bring the whole of the matters regarding the accused before public. The jury in the case of Wilson, charged with indecent assault, were locked up all night, and discharged this morning without giving a verdict. The prisoner will be tried again on Monday. DUNEDIN. July 7. The total quantity of beer brewed in Dunedin last year was 1,287,000 gallons. A man named James Marks, employed as night-watchman on the steamer Star of the South, was drowned through the capsizing of a small boat in the Upper Harbor last night.

July 7. The following are the nominations, for the Canterbury Cup received last night : Messrs. R. P. Hill, M'F&dgen, Duncan, Surman, Reid, M'Auly, Ronayne, Fraser, Thomson (2), Howard (2), M'Douald-(2), Board, Simpson (2), Kett, M'Connell, E. B. Hill, Cookson, Ravenhill, Judge, and Porter. - " July 8. A pigeon flying match from Rakaia miles), took plaoe yesterday with 86 entries. The winner was Mr. Williams'' Crusader; time 50J minutes.' At Ashburton yesterday, a woman named Walsh was found dead in her bed. Her husband was in a state of intoxication, and was arrested for manslaughter. There was a very severe frost last night. - In all 194 of the unemployed have applied to the Government officials for work. Yesterday the Government sent 125 of the unemployed to the railway works at Albury, Weka Pass, and Waddington. To-day 50 were sent to'Waddington. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Joseph Herdman Andrews was committed for trial for embezzling money belonging to his employer, Mr. Francis Innes. At the Supreme Court to-day Henry Davis for perjury received one year's imprisonment. AUCKLAND. July 8. Another jury was impannelled to try the Wangarei shooting o.ase, but after being locked up all night as was also the previous jury, they came into court and said they could not agree. The prisoner said he desired to be honorably acquitted, and demanded ,a third trial., Lawlor pleaded guilty to bigamy and was sentenced to 12 months. ■ : The City of Sydney with the London mails of June 17th left San Francisco on the 4th inst. , a day before the contract time. TIMARU. July 6. - At the Board of Education to-day, a tender for L9ll was accepted for the erection of another public school in Timaru. Eighty-six unemployed left for Albury extension rail ,vay works to-day. It is currently reported that an estate of 86,000 acres in this district has been purchased by Lincolnshire farmers, on the: advipe of the delegates who lately visited the colony. July 8. The ten thousand pounds worth of debentures issued by the Timaru Building Society to the Harbor Board have been fully liquidated, and despite the damaging statements recently made, the financial affairs of the Society are understood to be in a satisfactory and prosperous state. The fact of a staff of railway engineers surveying about a mile to the south of Timaru, where a property belonging to Messrs. Turnbull and Wakefield, the members of the House for the distriot, is situated, has created alarming and sensational rumors among the owners of town sections that it is intended to erect the new railway station on a new site. KUMARA. July 6. The action of the Government in instructing the Engineer in charge of the goldfields to afford what assistanpe was necessary for the recovery of the bodies of the men buried.in the sludge channel, meets with approbation. At a meeting of miners last night it was resolved to volunteer to give one man from every claim on the 'field to form shifts for the recovery of the bodies. Operations were commenced early this morning, and will continue until the men are found, From the dangerous nafcurg pf the ground, probably it will be a week before they are able to arrive at the spot were the men are supposed to have been killed, The contractors' loss is estimated at LSOO through the accident ooourring, as it involves a new shaft, and the removal of all machinery.
