MINING ACCIDENT AT KUMARA.
(by telegraph.) Ktjmara, July S. Just before 5 o'clock a serious accidienfr occurred at Maher's new shaft. At Larrikin's shaft five men had only shortly before gone down, consisting of tho three brothers Chalmers, Cummins, and another,, when a fall set in. The drive gave way,, and the stuff at once ran back to tho shaft, and up that about 50 feet, completely cutting off all escape of tho3ei below. Large numbers of miners soom congregated, and immediately commenced! operations for the recovery of tho mem, but the shaft had to be battened preparatory to taking out the stuff, which ia nojV/ being done. The cage was fortunati&he A at the time, and is now A \ the working party who can descend about, 70 feet. Three of the men have beeni spoken to through an air pipe, but cannot, account for the other two. Should all g» well, the men may be rescued in three days. Meantime no exertions are being spared by the contractors and tho miners in attending to their rescue.
