After our leader was in type we received from our correspondent intimation that the report that the Government had cut short the investigations of the Civil Service Commission had been authoritatively denied. A correspondent writes from Palmerston as follows : —Oa Friday evening an amateur entertainment in aid of the Palmerston Cricket Club took place, and was, I am happy to state, a great success. Much praise is djig to the ladies and gentlemen who took part in the proceedings, and it is to be hoped (this being their first attempt) that they will give the inhabitants of Palmerston another such treat during the winter months.

We need scarcely remind our readers that an organ recital will take place in St. Luke's Church this evening, commencing at eight o'clock, Mr. A. R. Kelsey .(from St. Paul's Cathedral, London,) wiU preside at the organ, at d will play a number of selections from the best piasters, and the choir will also give several selections from various oratorios. The Oamaru Rifles JS.apd, with a view of augmenting their funds and providing pleasant recreation for the public, have determined to inaugurate a regular series of Saturday evening promenade concerts in the Volunteer Hall. The programmes will consist of vocal and instrumental music,' and the nominal charge' of one .shilling will be made for admission. The first of the sepies will probably be given on the first Saturday in July, and members are requested to meet for the practise of the first programme tomorrow evening.
