James Hill, late Hospital Steward, was charged with having fraudulently embezzled certain articles, .property of the New. Zealand Government, on or about the 19th' November;last, i?r.ons the evidence of the principal witness it appeared that a draper supplied blankets, table linen, etc., to the late steward, who substituted a fictitious'vouoher for the goods, and for which the Government | paid. They have erected several fences across the line .'of road ".at Ngakutnikumi and the Constabulary have in every instance pulled the : fences down only to find them reerected by the flatiyes on thp'following day.- It is impossible to tell what ■this opposition may lead to. Yesterday three working men na,med Alex. Gardiner and Francis and' Peter Kennedy were found by the landlord of the Washdyke Hotel very drunk on his premises. As they had called for But few drinks his suspicions . were aroused, and, on making a search, he found in the stable two empty gin bottles, which they had evidently removed-from the billiard room. .They were each sentenced to-day to one week's imprisonment. O'Connor commenced his twelve hours' walking match against time on Saturday. He covered thirty miles in the first five and a-half hours. After completing 48 .miles in 9 hours and 42 minutes, he had to yield the sponge to an injured foot.
