THE ELECTION.

The official declaration of the. poll for the election of a member of the House of Representative for Waitaki was made at the Courthouse to-day. The building was well filled.

The Returning Officer (Mr. T. W. Parker) stated that no alteration had been made in the numbers, the poll being as follows ;—Mr. Jones, 775 ; Mr. Reid, 6<5G; and Mr. Roberts, 168. He had therefore to declare Mr. George Jones duly elected. The declaration was greeted with cheers.

Mr. Jones, who was applauded on coming forward, said he had only time to thank the electors for having placed him at the head of the poll. He would not make any promises. He was going to do his best for the district, and hoped that his actions n-ould give them more satisfaction than any promise he could make would do. He had only time to thank them again, as the train by which he intended to proceed to Wellington would bs leaying in a very few minutes He hoped that when he came back those who had been his friends aud those who had been his enemies would be satisr fied with what he had done.

Mr. John Reid, who was also applauded, said as one of the defeated candidates he had to thank the G66 electors who had voted for him. He expressed his surprise at receiving so large a number of votes in Oamaru, and said they were more than he had expected. He hoped that Mr. George jone3 would do his best for the district, that he woyld not become an obstructionist, and that he would give the present Ministry, who were a worthy set of men, every assistance in his pw.
