A deputation from the Benevolent Society waited on the Colonial Secretary this morning, to ascertain what assistance the institution would receive after the end of the present month, when the Corporation subsidy would cease. The Colonial Secretary replied that the question was a difficult one, and he would consult the Colonial Treasurer. KELSON. June IS. In the Supreme Court, before the Chief Jnitice, the sitting opened this morning. The crimir.al business consisted of a charge of forgery against A. L. Sweate. and charges of assault with intent against three- prisoners of the. Nelson gaol— Thompson, Deneber, and who came here from Wanganui gaol. In all the case 3 the grand jury found true bills. Sweate was sentenced to two years' hard labor, and Nett to two months. The other charges are proceeding. A bill was also presented to xhe grand jury in relation to the charge of perjury against Acton Adams, M.H.R., and just before 5 pm. the jury returned a true bill against him. The case will be tried on Wednesday. .

CHRISTCHURCH. June IS. The ketch Clematis returned to port this evening, having been run into by the Rotorua. She was hot making any water. June 19. From 1868 to 1879 inclusive, the Acclimatisation Society has distributed 79,911 trout in the rivers of Canterbury. At a meeting of the Society yesterday, it was resolved to comply with an application to present the Auckland Society with 5000 trout ova on the latter paying expenses. A resolution was passed asking the Government to exclude the Salmon and Trout Act, 1867, from the Acts repealed by the new Fisheries Bill; also, to amend clause 53 of the latter, which deprives the Acclimatisation Societies of the principal source of revenue. It was decided to send the Secretary to Wellington to lay these matters before the Groyepnmenfc. AUCKLAND. June 18. There was excitement in the share market to-day, a strong run being made on the Golden Crown, which rose from 23s to 245. Speculation was also rife on the probability of a breakdown of the Kurunui. A strange case has occupie4 the-Resi-dent Magistrate's Court at Hamilton. Mr. John Martin defended an actior brought by Mr.. Brekles to recover L 5 5s froni him for professional services, on the ground that the work in question was done on a Sundayj and could not, under the Lord's Day Act, be charged for. | The Parihaka meeting closed last night. The number of natives present was estimated at 800, Tohu and Te \Vhjti bqth spoke and were both very earnest in their exhortations to their followers to restrain themselves under any provocation given and to keep the peace. They said that the only way in which they could succeed in their undertaking was by avoiding war, no matter what provocation was given. A great deal of scripture language was used, and the natives were told that, the prophecies which related to the end of the world, alluded to the present time.
