. WELLINGTON. • June 17. The .mining: lease of the Golden Point Gold-Mining Company was sold by auction this afternoon to Mr. Reeves, M. H.R., for L4OO, and the plant to Mr. Masters for Llls. June 18. In two days 4500 signatures have been obtained to a petition against the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill. The whole of the City Councillors signed the petition. DUNEDIN. June 18. The Otago Acclimatisation Society urge the amendment of the Fisheries Bill by the incorporature of the provisions of the Salmon Trout Act, 1867, preserving to acclimatisation societies revenue from licenses and penalties. The Carnival takings to date amount to L5lO.
The body found on the Hindon railway has been identified as that of Michael M c Carthy, laborer. While in a fit, to which he was greatly subject, he fell into a few inches of water, and was drowned. CHRISTCHTJRCH. ' ... June 17. Since January 4, 42 vessels have been despatched from Lyttelton for the United Kingdom, representing in tonnage 46,819 tons. Before the end of the month six more, or 6106 tons, will leave. Besides, three vessels of 1398 tons have left for the Cape of Good Hope, making a total of 54,323 tons. AUCKLAND. June 18. William O'Connell was charged with forging and uttering a cheque for Ll4 on the National Bank. The prisoner was a sub-agent of the Government Life Insurance Department, and was recently doing canvassing at Coromandel, but getting short of money he presented the cheque in question at the bank and was at once informed it was forged. Ellen M' Clpughles, whose name the prisoner forged, deposed he had confessed the fact to her. GRAHAMSTOWN, . June 18. Mr. J, Stevenson's hotel was burnt down last night, at ten o'clock, There is no clue to the origin of the fire. The insurances amount to L2OO on the building in the Norwich Union, L2OO on the furniture, and LIOO on the stock, in the Imperial. The proprietor was about to proceed to Wellington as delegate of the Licensed Victuallers' Conference.
At the Municipal Council meeting last night a Committee recommended taking steps to increase the number of electors on the Thames electoral roll.
A petition to unseat Mr. Richardson for Christchurch, and., replace Sir George Grey, has received over 100 signatures.
PALMARSTON- NORTH. June 18.
' For a considerable time a party of prospectors, under, the command of an experienced miner (Mr. Rankin), has been searching for gold in gullies and creeks of the Tararna ranges. It has so far found a small amount of gold, but not in payable quantities. Mi". Rankin is convinced that there is a rich vein somewhere in the vicinity. The party toiled on in hope until provisions gave out! On Wednesday a meeting of the principal men of Palmerston was held in ; order to- thoroughly test, the matter they-determined to guarantee the storekeeper for provisions to the party for three months. The prospecting place is being made on the gorge fourteen miles from Palmerston. The party is sanguine of ultimate success. As the party were out through the recent wretched weather it may be expected that they have undergone some privations, and the whole suffer from rheumatism. So far they have expended LGO.in the venture, and now that their efforts-are being backed up they start away again on Sunday.
