Another highly paid Government office is to be created by the Ministry, at least so we gather from political gossip published in Ministerial organs. "We are told that the railway stores department is to be abolished, and that a General Inspector of Stores —a kind of repetition of the office previously so ably filled by Colonel Gorton, of brandingiron reputation—is to be appointed, with, we may fairly presume, the usual compliment of officials. This is the mode adopted by the Government of effecting reductions. "Withtheleft hand they abolish offices and with the right they create a new set of officials, the general result being that, as they can ply the right more deftly than they can the left hand, the work of multiplication still goes on apace. This, we fear, is almost invariably the case with all Governments, and we have no desire to single out any particular Ministry for condemnation; but while making this admission, we must certainly express surprise that the present econ .mical Ministry should have adopted a similar course. "We had almost hoped that at last a Ministry had been formed which would put their professions into practice, and that some relief would have been given to the taxpayers of the Colony by the abolition of all useless and expensive offices; but we despair of anything tangible being done, more especially as our correspondent at Wellington informs us that the Civil Service Commission's recommendation of a general i reduction of 12J per cent, has been modified so as to apply to the Railway Department only.
