The Oamaru Mail. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1880.

Captain Edwin reports that there are indications of strong winds from any direction between north-east and north-west and that within 12 hours the glass will further fall.

It is announced that the Rev. W. Gillies, of Timarn, will deliver a lecture under the auspices of the Good Templar Lodge, in the Pnkenri School-room, on Friday evening. The snbjeet of the lecture will be " Pluck, Probity, and Perseverance, illustrated in the lives of W. and R. Chambers." The known ability of Mr. Gillies as a lecturer is a guarantee that an intellectual treat awaits those who attend his lecture on Friday. We should mention that admission will be free.

The adjourned practice of No. 1 Company's Band will be held on Friday evening.

The body of a newly-bnrn infant has been found under a bridge on the North Road. In consequence of this being election day, and as many members would probably not attend, it has been decided to postpone the weekly practice of the Philharmonic Society until to-morrow evening, when members are particularly requested to attend. The Licensing Bench sat yesterday afternoon for the purpose of further considering adjourned applications for licenses. In the cases of the Globe and Royal Hotels the applications were further adjourned for 14 deys. Mr. Balmer intimated that an application would be made under the Licensing Ordinance, IS7O, to allow Mr. P. M'Carthy to obtain the bottle license in the place of Mr. Henry Ellis. A short meeting of the Hospital Committee was held last evening. The report of the Visiting Committee was read, stating that on the usual monthly visit being made to the Hospital they found everything going on satisfactorily, and that there were 10 patients in the institution—7 males and 3 females. The Committee acknowledged with thanks, contributions of illustrated papers from Mesdames Clowes and Cagney, and of books and linen from Mr. H. H. Cogging. Accounts amounting to L 33 15s 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting termiminated.
