ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE OAMARU MAIL. Sir,—ln your issue of the 7th inst., we who have the welfare of our fellow-men at heart were pleased to notice the remarks made by Mr. G. Sumpter, aa Ooroner, at the inquest held at Windsor re the death of Thomas Guy, The facts of the caso are notieied, and olearly stated by him ; but, judging from the verdiot returned, those facts did not muoh impress the minds of the jurymen. Suoh questions as the following foroe themselves on rae : —Why did not the verdict record (at least) that he met his death through drunkenness? Was it because the man who sold him the drink was foreman of the jury ? Is it usual for publioans to ba foremen of juries when men meet their death through drunkenness ? If usual, it seems far from being right or expedient. T-Fas therp no bl(tme to be attaohed to anyone ? The verdict says no blame was attributable to anybody. What about the man who sold him the 3s 6d worth of brandy? Satisfactory answers to these questions are kindly solicited on,behalf of humanity.—lam, &c.,
Charles E. Barley,
