(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. June 14. At a meeting of licensed victuallers this afternoon, a deputation was appointed to wait on brewers with a view to coming to some arrangement as to what amount of the Recently imposed tax on beer should be charged to the publicans. June 15, Pounceby and Smart, oyster saloon keepers, and Mrs. Campbell, general storekeeper, were fiued L 5 for sly grog selling. : DUNEDIN. June 14. A local brewer calculates that if the proposed beer tax becomes law, six Dunedin brewers will amongst them contribute no less a sum than L 32,000 annually to the revenue.

SSAt a meeting of brewers held to-night, James Marshall and Maurice Joel were appointed delegates to go to Wellington to act with the other associations for the repeal of the beer tax.

June 15.. A meeting of agents was held this afternoon to consider the property tax.

The Chamber of Commerce forwarded to the Select Committee of the House its last year's recommendations re the Bankrubtcy Act,

June-15. During the past week 31,530 sacks of grain were carried on the Lyttelton and Christchurch railway. Larrikinism is seriously prevalent in the Heathcote district, near Christchurch. One resident recently sustained damage to the extent of L4O.

The Colonial Secretary, replying to the petition from Christchurch, says the Government cannot undertake to introduce a Bill for preventing the further increase of sparrows and other grain-eating birds. At a meeting of licensed victuallers held last night to consider the new Licensing Bill, the following alterations were proposed :—That more than one license may be held by one person ; that the time for making objection to a license be extended ; that no person under the age of twenty-one should be allowed to give a vote on the question of licensing or removing a license; that fees for licenses be L 25, L3O, L4O, and LSO, for 10, 11, 12 o'clock, and all night licenses. Objection was taken to taken to single women holding licenses. Sundry other amendments, chiefly minor ones, were suggested. It was resolved to communicate with Wellington on the subject. The next matter discussed was the beer tax. The meeting was unanimous in opposing the tax, and appointed delegates to proceed to Wellington to represent their views on the subject. Two sticking-up cases are said to have occurred in the vicinity of Christchurch on Sunday last. Sailed —Duntroon, ship, for London.

The medical officers have decided that the cases of sickness on board the Norfolk are not small pox, and recommend the release of the vessel from quarantine. The Norfolk leaves for Wellington and Sydney on Thursday. The annual licensing meeting is now being held. A meeting of brewers and publicans last night resolved to send a deputation to Wellington to meet the delegates from other places, and take steps for the repeal of the tax. An offer by Mr. Dodson, local brewer, to pay half the tax and the publicans the other half until the Bill is entered on the,. Statute-Book, and the price of beer to remain as at present, was accepted. TIMARU. June 15. The Supreme Court to-day has been taken' up with the case of the National Bank v. M'lntosh, an action to recover L2OOO for non-fulfilment of a guarantee. The defence is that Mr. Stevens, manager of the bank, induced defendant to sign a guarantee on behalf of John King, although he knew the latter was hopelessly involved at the time. Mr. Stevens emphatically denies that he knew King's position, but in cross-examination acknowledged to M'lntosh having LI4OO worth of bills falling due which he could not meet. He offered; him the required accommodation on condition that he should execute the guarantee. The caee is now proceeding. NEW PLYMOUTH. June 14.

James Hill, late Hospital Steward, was arrested to-day on a charge of having embezzled certain stores of the Governor while acting as Steward of the institution. He was remanded, bail being allowed, himself in L2OO, and two sureties of LIOO each.

The licensed victuallers met this afternoon, when several resolutions were passed, one condemning the tax as unfair and excessive. The secretary was instructed to draw up a petition to the House, asking to be relieved of the same. The petition is to be forwarded to Mr. Kelly for presentation, and copies sent to Major Atkinson and Colonel Trimble.
