Mr. John Reid will address the electors n the Volunteer Hall at seven o'clock this evening, and at the termination of his meeting, at nine o'clock, Mr. Jones will take possession of the hall." Mr. W. H. S. Roberts addressed a large meeting of electors at the Railway Hotel, Windsor, last evening, and received a vote of confidence. Mr. G. Jones addressed the electors in the the Schoolhouse, Livingstone, last evening. Mr. Smith occupied the chair, and the building was well filled. At the conclusion of his address,-Mr. Jones was subjected to an hour's questioning, particularly by Mr. W. Sutherland. On the motion of Mr Botting, simultaneously seconded by Mr. M'Quade and Mr. Honau, a vote of confidence was carried almost unanimously, only one hand being- held up against it. Captain Edwin wires : —There are indications of strong winds from any direction between north-east and north and west within twelve hours. The glass will further fall.
Mr. A. H. Maude reports that he held a sale of leases for a' term of 21 years on account of the School Commissioners of the Otago Provincial District, and also on account of the Board of Governors of the Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools, at which the following rents were realised: —Section 8, block 70, Oamaru, L 5 10s; section 6, block 77, Oamaru, L 6'; section 21, block 91, Oamaru, L 6 15s; section 4, blopk 5, Oamaru, L 9 9; section 16, block 24, Oamaru, L2O; section 10, block 9, Oamaru, L 9 ss; section. 98, block 2, Papakaio district, containing 40a. 2r. 21p., at lis per acre. The Philharmonic Society will hold their weekly practice as usual in the Volunteer Hall to-morrow evening. A full rehearsal is desired, as "Maritana" must be given within a few days. We have been favored with the following: —"To Mr. George Jones.—Sir, —How do you like the strum of the awfull piano now. You are not writing leaders against the ; Boarding houses now. What is the reason, ' Echo answers—Because I want to have some ! of them to vote for Jones. Well that is a mistake. You shall not have ten of the 1 men that frequents the Oamaru Boarding houses. Put .them down now, as you said in your dirty rag, a few months ago, as , being hot Beds of iniquity, and you would < not get one vote in the crowd. No, sir. < But if there is ten in the Boarding houses < that would vote for you I shall try and win them over, and hundreds besides, —I remain, j yours truly, William Shaw, Criterion r Boarding house, Oamaru." A lecture was delivered last evening in c the New Tees-street Hall (under the auspices of the Oamaru Young Men's Christian Asso- £ ciation), by Mr. W. M. Green, of Dunedin, on "The Bible and modern Freethouglit." £ Mr. J. Mirams acted as chairman, and c ever 200 persons were present. In his in- r ' troductory remarks, Mr. Green stated he intended to show that it was reasonable to expect a Divine revelation, and in an able j ( and eloquent discourse clearly proved, evi- C i dently to the satisfaction of his hearers, h the existence of a God and the reasonable- fa ness of a revelation from Him. The lecturer has an easy and pleasing style of delivery, and his arguments were of a forcible character and given in a manner that p, cai-ried conviction with them. A vote of b< thanks was proposed by the Rev. A. B. A Todd, and the meeting closed with prayer. _ re
