(per pkess association.) WELLINGTON. June 11. A woman named Eliza Blauford was found dead in her bed this morning. A medical examination showed that death had resulted from suffocation while in a fit. An inquest will be held. At an inquest yesterday on the body of Cornelius Croft, who was killed on Tuesday, a verdict of accidental death was returned. Dr. Hector states that exhibitors from this Colony obtained 99 awards for first merit, 85 for second, 81 for third, and 59 fourth, being 324 in all; so that more than half the exhibitors obtained awards. About 30 informations have' been laid for sly grog selling. Amonng those.summoned are oyster saloon keepers and fruiterers. The charges will be heard in a day or two. CHRISTCHURCH. June 10. The "brewers were caught napping by the tax. The police visited all the establishments early. In one instance they caught a bottler who had got wind of the change conveying a large quantity of liquor from his premises, and turned it back. June 11. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Jane Mathews was committed for trial for infanticide. The body of the child was found in the Avon some days ago. After her arrest the prisoner admitted giving birth prematurely to a child on the river bank on the evening before the body was found. AUCKLAND. June 10. At a meeting of licensed victuallers the retail price of beer was raised to 6d per pint, 5d outside. The Mayor has convened a meeting for to-morrow night to consider the property tax.

June 11. During the gale last night a shed in Shortland-street was blown down.

June 11. An unknown person made a murderous assault on Mr. Campbell, solicitor, last night, striking him on the head with a blunt instrument. Mr. Campbell was unpopular through informing against men working without miners' rights. This is supposed to be the cause of the assault. The Star draws attention to the fertile state of the Auckland Quarantine Station, and states that 100 passengers of the Earl Granville have died from fever contracted on the island. It adds that the quarters were alive with vermin, and filthy in the extreme.

TIMARU. June 10. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, Patrick Egan, Thomas Osborne, Neil McNeil, John Hennessy, Peter Rooney, John M'Carthy, Alex. Godsell, Hugh Boyd, and John Coffey were charged that, while servants in the employ of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, they did, on 7th June, at Three Springs Station, conspire together to seize and take out of the possession of the said Company fifteen horses, valued at L 750, of which the Company were mortgagees, lawfully in possession, with intent to extort from the Company divers gums of money lawfully due by the Company to the defend:ants, but alledgad to be due to them for wages by one Walter Allan, The charges were dismissed. ' The accused, who are a very decent lot of men, were kept in gaol all night, bail being refused.

INVERCARGILL.; June 10. The following telegram from the South* land Times' correspondent was received

this evening from ?Riverton : A .cake pf gold 47o:js lldwtslias just been brought down from * Printz's claim, Longwood, being the result of the first week's crushing. The battery was not working steadily. Thirty-eight tons of stuff, not picked, was put,up. No washing has yet taken place.
