Mr Shbimski carried in the House of Representatives yesterday a very pertinent motion,-and one that. .is. eminently well. calculated to show how Oamaru has been slighted in the matter of public buildings. The motion we allude to is one calling for a return showing in detail the amount of money expended by the General Government, since the abolition of provinces,, at Timaru, Invercargill, New Plymouth, Wai'mate, and Oamaru, in the erection and construction of public buildings—viz., courthouses, customhouses, post! find telegraph offices, gaols/ hospitals, land and. registration offices, &c.We are convinced. that : when tb.is return, is prepared it will disclose very forcibly the fact that in the naatter of expenditure, of public money Oamaru has been shamefully treated, for while other towns of no greater importance have been favored with handsome and expensive structures, jfchis town has been compelled to remain content with the patching up of the Telegraph Office. Tljere is not a decent public building in the town. The Courthouse, Telegraph and Post Offices, and' the railway station are miserable apologies, possessing neither beauty nor convenience to recommend them, while the officers, of the Customs are compelled to seek shelter under - the roof of a hired building. Mr. Shrimski has acted wisely, while drawing the attention of the House to the matter, in insti. tuting comparisons between Oamaru and other towns in the Colony that .have, we think, been unduly favored, while this town has been slighted. - v
