Arrangements are being completed by which the-enforcement of the compulsory clauses of the Education Act will, in the first instance, be carried out by the police in the Dunedin district. ■ June 4. : In the case Kershaw v. M'lntyre in the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, the Bench ordered the prosecution of the defendant for flagrant perjury, his own witness contradicting hini. In the case of Williams v. Davies, a publican, the magistrate gave judgment against the defendant for LlO 15s, the value of a, swag belonging to a lodger, 'which had been stolen from the hotel. CHRISTCHURCH. June 4, At the inquest on the body of W. Hankins, jockey, yesterday, the medical evidence proved that-death was caused by a fracture of the skull.' A verdict of accidental death was returned. A man named Charles Smith, a carpenter recently arrived from Napier ? who has been drinking hpayily lately,- attempted to commit suicide at Rolleston yesterday by cutting his throat. He was brought to the hospital, where he lies in a precarious state. A son of Dr. Rouse was run over by the tramcars and taken to the hospital. KELSON. June 4. Antonio Webb was charged this morning with the attempted murder of his wife and remanded till Monday. It now appears that he did not gtab the worpan, but that he threw a heavy knife at her, and that it struck her in the back and passed between the ribs, the wound being an inch wide. The woman has been drinking, and it cannot be determined whether or not the wound is likely to prove fatal. TIMARU. June 3. A public meeting will beheld to-morrow night, re the property tax.
