WELLINGTON. May 29. The Local Industries Commission commenced this afternoon. It is expected their report will be presented to Parliament at the end of next week. A man named Walter White was severely crushed by a fall of earth at a cutting at Newtown this afternoon. He now lies in a precarious condition, and but slight hopes are entertained of his recovery. May 31.
At the Appeal Court this morning, in the case of the Queen v. Hall, an appeal from the Supreme Court, Wellington, the conviction was squashed. In the case of the Queen v. Jfemarvana -in appeal from the Auckland Court, the conviction was upheld. The ketch, Forest Queen, recently beached at Guard's Bay has been launched, and she arrived here this morning. Very little damage has been done to her. The injuries received by the man White on Saturday has proved fatal. An inquest i 3 being held. The schooner Colleen Bawn, whjch left here for Havelock on the Ist May, is, missing, and is supposed to be lost. At an inquest on the body of the man White, a verdict of accidental death was returned. , I CHMSTCHURCH. May 29. ; Mrs. Ekin, an old Canterbury resident, died recently at Spreydon at the mature j age of 85 years. Three days before her death she walked from Spreydou to Christchurch and back, a distance of eight I
miles. She had been married over sixtytwo years, and her son died recently in England at the age of sixty years. Subscriptions are freely coming in from all quarters for the projected soup kitchen ] and winter relief depot. A. meeting ofi those desirous of assisting has been called by the Mayor for Monday next for the formation of a committee. May 31. A 24-hours' walking match has been arranged between Swan, of Christchurch, and Gleeson, of Timaru, for LIOO a-side. Nominations for the Waterloo Cup must be sent in to the Secretary of the Canterbury Club not later than 8 o'clock on Tuesday evening. The Timaru steeplechases have been fixed for 18th June. Nominations for the Handicap, of 100 sovs., will close on Friday, at 8 p. m. John Hill, while working in a shingle pit at Dunsandel on Saturday, had one of his legs severely crushed by a portion of the upper bank falling on him. He was brought in to the Hospital. Mr. R. Bay has disposed of his training establishment and racing stock to Dr. Prins, of Christchurch. AUCKLAND. • May 29. ' The Government has decided upon allowing Mr. Cotter, examiner of Titles and Registration and Returning Officer, to remain at Auckland, thereby gountprmanding his removal to Dunedin. Mr. Colls, Registrar of Deeds, and Mr. Cotter have had a reduction made in their respective salaries owing to these arrangements.

The Danae, corvette, has arrived from Samoa. She will probably remain till the end of June, when she proceeds to Wellington, to meet the commodore and receive a fresh crew from the Raleigh. During her stay at the Solomon Islands, the Danae yfsited most of the islands of the group, and discovered a fine unknown harbor. During the last four months the ship has been employed at the -Sanioan Islands in upholding the claims by Malisova. Constant quarrels among rival parties have frequently called for interference, and only a few days before she left an' was committed by the people of Lufi Jjufi on the royal party, which necessitated the destruction of the town. The seamen and marines, in the face of an army of 3000 men which were assembled in the neighborhood, landed and destroyed a whole settlement. Four houses, with a bake-house and stable, in Kyber Pass Road, were entirely destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. The damage is estimated at L 450. Two men pamed Kingsley and Lonnaud, who have been under the surveillance of the police, induced Major Westrup to play "chicken hazard" at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Saturday. They won L6B from him. He gave a cheque, but afterwards stopped the same and communicated with thp police. Gallagher, the landlord of the hotel, has been summoned for per- | mitting gambling in 1)13 licensed house. ! Ten more boys have absconded from | the Naval Training School. Three were captured, and three are still missingi The Hinemoa arrived last night. For tripping a constable and rescuing a drunken man, Edward Phillips was sentenced to 48 hours' imprisonment without i the option of a fine. Phillips excused himself by saying he had just been dis- | charged from the hospital, and that drink I took s, strong effect on him. i -* WANGANUI. May 81. The case against John Selkirk Capstick, for fraudulent proceedings in connection with his bankruptcy, broke down, and the information was dismissed, and four guineas costs awarded to Capstick.
