COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
' CHRISTCHTJRCfI. Fbt teubokaph. f L May 27. Th« week has been comparative y uneventful. Nothing has transpired to mar terially alter the aspect of the market, leading in port has been somewhat retarded Isr the wet" weather lately prevailing, ami deliveries by rail have suffered from the same cause. ■ _ Wheat is selling at 3a Ikl to 3s ad according to quality, but the business transacted not been of an extensive character. For a prime lot a trifle more can be obtained. There is moderate inquiry for seed lot 3, and a few sales of parcels of this clas3 have come under notice. Chick wheat Is in fair rapplv, and has been quitted at 2s 3d to -s Gd, and'for the better das 3 up to 2s 9d and
2s lOd. Oats.—Sales continue to be made on a scale at Is 2.1 to Is 3d for good feed, and. for milling quality at Is 4d to Is 4 Ad. Australian advices still continue discourag-
Barley- 1 There is the same hopeless feeling. "Sales are difficult to make, and values tsn'ge for good malting from 2a 6d to 3s 6d. THtae is nothing doing in the lower values. Potatoes: are being sold at the old rates of 25a to 27s 6d. The supply coming forward is folly equal to the demand. Floor has been sold freely at lilO to. Lll, the nulla are all busy. Jfntto'n is still quoted at 2d per lb. The wet weather this week prevented more than a limited supply being brought forward.
WELLINGTON. (BY TELEGRAPH.) . ; • • May 27. Mr. James O'Shea reports Flour, Adelaide, owing to the inferior quality of the domestic manufacture and the protective duty per ton, this article has no sale except importers submit to a reduction- on last week's quotation. The mills in the South, from which we draw our supply, must be tyrßiming in stock, from the fact that quotations are fully 10a below my last week's report, and notwithstanding sales are to actual wants, dealers or bakens will only buy from hand to mouth; antic : - ptinjy 3 further reduction. The mills will not. recede from their quotations this week. Noaales of Adelaide reported. Christohnrch City Milte, sma'l lots, LlO 15s to Lll ; ■harps, Sss; bran, 70s ; oats, Is 9d to 23; oatmeal, Lll to Lll 5s for M'GilTs. The demand was poor, and t week's prices were scarcely maintained. Bollocks fetched from LS 10s to L 9 15s; and ebws L 4 to L62s 6d per head. We quote prime beef 22s 6d, and medium ISs to 20s per lOOlba, ' Fat Sheep were in very full supply. Of the |3SSB penned, 2102 were merinos, and i486 cross-breds. Croai-breda sold at from ! : s Od to 12s 3d per f>+aA juid merinos at 5s 6d to 7s 9d per head. We disposed of draughts on. account of Mr. John Duncan, of Cherry Farm, at 9s 6d per head ; anil on account of Mr. Henry Elston, at 8s 3d for cross-breds ; and 5s 3d to 5s 6d for merinos. Quotation for prime mutton (cross-bred), 2d per lb. . Fat Lambs.—Only 21 were forward, which we sold at 5a per head. Wool.—We are glad to observe that the telegrams received during the week report an improvement rn the tone of the London suctions now in progress, and, as judging by detailed advices to hand by the mai's, the condition of the market both in • Great Britain and on the Continent, was a very healthy one. We are hopeful of the improvement being confirmed and continued to the elose of the series. Locally there is nothing of interest to report. Sheepskins —Our weekly sale was held on Tuesday, when, with a fair competition, we cleared a good catalogue at some improvement on last week's prices. Butchers' crossbred skins realised 3s 4d to .is sd; merinos, 2f sd; station skins in bales, GAd per lb. "HM»a—There 13 nothing fresh to report, L the demand continuing good at the quota- : tions which have prevailed for several weeks. . ' Grain.—Wheat: 3s 10 to 3s lid might be obtained for the finest milling, bnt holders ggofP indisposed to quit their parcels at these For medium samples we quote 3s 6d to 3s 3d per bushel. Oats: There has beep inquiry, but we do not hear that much business has resulted. 13 4d is the highest , quotation, and it is doubtful whether even Aw coiild be obtained except for very prime patyafa Barley : Buyers are not inclined to go beyond 3s 6d per bushel for prime maltBig, and as the supply of such description is very small, and there is no demand for inferior, business in this grain must be reported qtriet.
Messrs. Maclean and Co. report for the -■ 'week ending- 26th May .is follows Fat Cattle. —A moderate supply of 15S head- were yarded to-day, about a score of which were stores, the balance being only lair quality, with the exception of a fewpens, which were prime. The lot was disposed of, but bidding wa3 very slack, last week's rates being barely maintained for heavy weights, while really prime medium weights realised quite up to late quotations. Store Cattle and Sheep.—We have no transactions, but for the latter there is a food demand for turnip feeding. . Wool.—Advices from the Home market, par cable, during-the-past week have been somewhat more encouraging, a firmer tone having been manifested at the later sales. While not sanguine enough to expect a recovery to the extreme limit reached for croos-breds at the opening of these sales, we are inclined to believe that these descriptions for some time to come will fetch—relatively to merinos—higher prices than they have done for some years past. 1 Sheepskins.—We held no sales this week, Privately, we have disposed of over 1000 ,akins of ordinary descriptions ct np to 3s 3d. - Hides.—Daring the week, we have disposed'of 70 hides at up to 3?d for wet salted. Tallow.—The quotations for good quality may be stated at 2.1 h ; rough fat, 10s per cwt.
