Mr. Jones' Committee met last night for the despatch of business. The meeting was largely attended, and the results reported of a highly satisfactory nature. A meeting of the Committee is called for Friday evening, at S o'clock, and will be held at Mi'. Emslie's new buildings, Thames-street, next the Globe Hotel.
The sale of Mr. Kerr's property (No. 8 Harbor Board Sub-division), which was advertised for the sth June, has been postponed till Thursday, 10th June.
Mr. John Reid will address the Kakanui electors tliis evening, at 7 o'clock, at the Athenrcum.
Mr. George Jones will address the electors of Otepopo at 7 o'clock this evening, at the Atlienreum.
Mr. W. H. S. Roberts will meet the electors of Duntroon at the Schoolhouse at 7 o'clock this evening.
I The usual fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council will be held this evening. About 100 electors of the Hampden district assembled at the public hall last night to listen to an address from Mr. Jones on political matters. At the conclusion of the candidate's remarks, a large number of questions were asked and received replies. A vote of thanks and confidence in Mr. Jones as a fit and proper person to represent the district in Parliament was carried. The meeting broke up after paying the usual compliment to the occupant of the chair (Mr. W. Murcott). Mr. Reid addressed the electors at Maheno last night, in the Public Hall. There were about 150 persons present. Mr. Booth occupied the chair, and introduced the speaker in complimentary terms. The address was listened to throughout with the greatest interest, and afterwards numerous questions were put and satisfactorily answered. A vote of confidence was carried by acclamation.
Our Otepopo correspondent writes :—Mr. Reid addressed the electors last night, reiterating his Oamaru statements. Owing to the severity of the weather, only about thirty persons were present. A vote of confidence was moved and seconded, but only three electors and one non-elector held up their hands in its favor. Mr. James White, who acted as chairman, received a hearty vote of thanks.
A concert will be held in the Maheno public hall on Tuesday, June 1, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the Maheno public hall.
The nominations for candidates to fill the vacancies in the Otepopo Road Board, caused bv the annual retirement of members, will take place on the 3rd June. At the Resident Magistrates' Court this morning, before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M. Charles Newland and Francis Henry were fined 20s each for being drunk and disorderly. John Longhlin, a neglected child was sent to the Industrial School for two years. The usual meeting of St. Paul's Young Men's Association will be held at 7.30 this evening. The subject will be an essay on " Mohammed, and the Koran." The usual monthly meeting of the Waiareka Road Board was held yesterday afternoon in the office, Tj-ne-street. There were present:—Messrs. J. Reid (chairman), A. Isdale, T. Reid, R. Jackson, W. Cruickshanks, H. Little, and Oliver (engineer). After the preliminary business had been disposed of, the following letters, &c., were reml:—From the Secretary to the Treasury, containing form for claiming subsidy or rates for the past year, but holding out no definite prospect of the same being paid during the approaching session ; and with reference i thereto, the Clerk stated that a claim for L 1341 Si Id had been forwarded to the Treasury.—From the Under-Secretary for Public Works and from the RegistrarGeneral, asking for statistical information : from Mr. Church (auditor), certifying to the correctness of the books and accounts for the past year; from Mr. J. Martin (County Clerk), containing copy of resolution passed at last meeting of the Waitaki County Council, re the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bili: and from Messrs. Newton and Mi rams, requesting that the conveyances of road-lines—Lee's to the Queen —be not delayed. A petition, signed by Messrs. J. K. Cramer, Joseph Deans, and eight others, was then read, praying that the road-line from Peak's-road to Raki's Table railway station he made passable for traffic, the present conditon of road rendering it impossible to convey the seed wheat; and it was resolved that the engineer prepare plans, &c., for works Peak's-road to junction with Stotfoldroad. After arrangements had been made for the annual elections, the Inspector's report was read, in which lie pointed out the ! public inconvenience arising from the condition of the Waiareka Crossing; and Mr. Menlove waited on. the Board, pointing out the necessity for a bridge on this road-line, A resolution was passed, asking the County Council to take over the road-line from C'ounty-road the Elderslie railway station. It was decided to employ an additional surface-man on the district roads during the grain season, and the engineer was instructed to report on the cost of opening up roadliue from C'helmer-streetto Cave Valley-road, and completing necessary works on Coal Pit-road at Finn Valley. A resolution to sue for payment of rates in arrears, and the passing of accounts to the amount of LlO4 •2s, concluded to business.
