Sir Andrew Clark will accompany the Marquis of Ripon, the new Viceroy, to India on Thursday, at his special request. May 13.
The collection of pictures which the London Commission is sending to Melbourne, although limited, is of first-class merit, including Sir Frederick Leighton's original cartoon, " War," besides the works of other eminent artists.
At a meeting of the Catholic Union in London, the Duke of Norfolk presented Cardinal Newman with the salver subscribed for in Sydney, and made from Australian gold. The Cardinal replied, warmly thanking his Australian friends. May 15.
Owing to the turbulence caused by men at Roubaix and elsewhere, the military have been employed to preserve order. Thirty thousand operators haye struck work at Blackburn. It is hoped that the dispute will shortly be arranged. An impetus has been given to the shipping trade, in consequence of the enormous emigration to America from Great Britain and Germany. There are increasing indications of Abdul Rahman's desire to arrange with the British in Afghanistan. The state of affairs in the remote districts of Roumelia is causing much anxiety. Bands of Bulgarian soldierly have been indulging in the utmost excesses in defiance of the authorities, and they have in numerous instances assailed the Mahommedan population. Intelligence has been received that nine Turkish villages have been attacked and given up to pillage. The women were outraged, and the males (young and old) slaughtered without mercy. May 16.
The health of the 'Empress of Russia continues critical. By the latest intelligence very, little hopes are entertained of her recovery.
Bradlaugh has addressed a written protest to the House of Commons against the decision of the Select Committee in his case. The question raised is exciting considerable interest.
Prince Leopold has left England for Canada, where he will remain for a time as the guest of the Governor-General and his sister, the Princess Louise. The Prince purposes making a tour through Canada and the Western States.
The strikes among the operatives at Blackburn and Oldham, Lancashire, are assuming serious proportions, and greatly interfere with the state of trade. Several mills have been closed. Thousands of men are out of employment, Much disquiet has been occasioned by the state of affairs in Turkey, which it is feared will lead to the re-opening of the Eastern question. The Albanians are in arms, and have offered forcible resistance to the attempts made by Montenegro to occupy the territory ceded to it by the Treaty of Berlin. Acting under pressure from the Powers, the Grand Vizier has exerted his authority to prevent further conflict between Albania and Montenegro, but up to the present without success, Mr. Goschen, the special ambassador to the Porte, has been instructed to proceed first to the principal European Courts, in order to confer-with the Powers upon the position of affairs. He will visit Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, to ascertain the views of the Foreign Ministers, and arrange for carrying out tho unsettled provisions of the Berlin Treaty. Great indignation is expressed in Ireland owing to tho proposal of the Gladstone Government to havo recourso to coercivo measures for dealing with political and agrarian agitation. the Ministry by the National Press. The authorities -remain firm, and intend to prosecute "flagrant instances of seditious language. Intelligence has been received of a serious defeat inflicted upon the Chilians While advancing upon Moquequa. They were entrapped into an ambuscade and outnumbered. Having to fight at a disadvantage they were defeated with heavy loss. The feeling of irritation between Austria and England, caused by Mr. Gladstone's indictment of the Austrian policy, has been allayed by the explanation offered. The Austrian Premier has declared that Austria will be prepared to co-operate with England in any measure calculated to bring about a satisfactory settlement of Turkish affairs. May 18.
The Home Rale members have held a meeting to consider the line of policy they will adopt in the new Parliament. They have elected Mr. Parnell leader, and resolved to systematically press upon the Imperial Parliament the redress of Irish grievances. Intelligence has been received at Madrid of a serious outbreak in Ouba.
