THE DISTRICT RAILWAYS ACT.

HO THE EPITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL. Sir,—l notice in yesterday evening's issue a writer signing himself Watchman," asks our late member, Mr. Hislop, the reason why he voted with the Government for the guarantee to private companies, against the. wishes of his party and colleague, Mr. Shrimski. There was a report that Mr. Hislop's reason was because he thought; that if the Colony were benefited as a whole it might be Considered consistent 'with the principles

of Liberalism to vote against the majority of his own party. Allowing that some such sophistry got possession of his mind, how did he; reconcile his position as senior member of a Liberal" electorate with an act of self-evident political jobbery 1 Perhaps Mr. Reid, "who will address the people of this town to-night, can favor us with an explanation touching this little business from his inexhaustable stock of railway experience.—l am, &c., . Elector.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE| OAMARTX MAIL. Sir, —I am very much surprised that Mr. T. W. Hislop should take such an active part in bringing any candidate to the front for our acceptance, knowing that he has had five years' hard work himself, and has had to throw it up because he could not attend to it. I think his part of the play should have been to have tackled his private business, cast his vote where he thought best, and left the rest for other people who have got more time and their own ideas on the matter of whom they will have as a representative. I am, &c., An Elector.
