LAST NIGHT MEETING.

—TV ~ to tiie edit6e OF-the OAMARU MAIL. ' Sir, —The Liberal electors of Waitaki, outside Oamaru, should be enlightened as to the nature of the proceedings at last night's meeting. Briefly, the meeting was convened for the purpose of retiring Mr. Roberts and uniting the Liberal party. On Monday last, Messrs. Thomson and myself, two of Mr. Roberts' supporters, who had been actively engaged in sounding and canvassing the Liberal electorate of Oamaru and the country districts in his favor, waited upon Mr. Roberts, and represented to him that the tide of public opinion 011 the part of the Liberal party was most strongly for Mr. Jones, and that they thought it would be best, in the interests of the Liberal cause, for Mr. Roberts to retire. That gentleman, in answer, stated that he was perfectly willing to retire, and that he placed himself entirely in the hands of his friends. It was then agreed to retire Mr, Roberts formally, and to this end I was entrusted with the drawing up of a requisition in effect from the Liberal eleotors asking the candidate to retire, and it was asked that a meeting should be called for the purpose of presenting it and enabling him to retire with honor to himself and credit to the party he sought to represent. On Friday morning, however, Mr. Roberts communicated with Messrs. Thomson and myself and stated that he repudiated his previous action, and that-he was determined to stand in spite of any man ; saying further that the party must unite and put him in—-that is, that the majority must yield to the minority. Messrs. Thomson and myself, and others of his supporters hold that they are individually and morally free from any pledges of support given by them to Mr. Roberts from Monday last, and that, in his persisting to stand in defiance of his agreement to retire, he has disqualified himself as far as those electors holding liberal principles are concerned. I ask, in conclusion, why Mr. Roberts did not explain the reason of his repudiation at the meeting.—Yours, &0., W. F. Kinnear.
